What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Beautiful example of the Sheep Soup there wundergussy !!:thumbup:

The New Day release sports a Spey French pull main. 6 knives in this addition, 3 single blades and 3 with the Pen added. 2 jigged bone colors, Copperhead and Evergreen also a single and 2 blade in African Blackwood.
The "A New Day" blade etch was drawn up by our very own Gunstock Jack! Barry Johnson is and has been a very large part of our little corner of the net, and I am fortunate to call him a Friend. He is always there to help out a new enthusiast and is Honest as the day is long. He has helped with the Annual Traditional Forum knife for many years by doing ALL the shipping and gives his time unselfishly to this forum. I believe this is the second etch that Barry has drawn for the TC line. Most of us have seen his Wonderful art work in leather!:thumbup:
To the knives.......the single blades....

I forgot to add, all knives in this release came with "A New Day" button as shown in the single blade versions. There was no room with the 2 blades.
The Pen is placed behind the Spey Main on the addition BUT curiously the boys position on the front label does not change as it has in the past!:confused:
A New Day....2 blades.........

The front label has a Ham and Eggs bucket and By Golly the contents are Green!! Perhaps a reference to Dr. Seuss??? A New Day Banner was added along with an extra crowing Rooster, a Pullet and a piglet. The boys seem to be sharing a cup of Coffee or Tea and Huck is feeding the Hen.

The rear label tells us about the improved Spey blade inside this tube. With Barry's rooster once again sounding the alarm!!

Up next..... The Ancients

The Ancient release consists of 5 single Lambsfoot blade knives. I believe there were only going to be 4 additions to this release but the good people at GEC applied 5 sets of Parchment bone handles upside down, thus creating a somewhat scarce 5th addition.
This was a brave undertaking for our Barlow Leader as NO U.S. knife manufacturer had released anything similar in recent history. But Charlie wanted to take this pattern back to it's roots! And he wanted them to appear old right from the factory. So special care was taken to leave some of the heat treating scale on the finished product. So the Ancient was born anew!
As Charlie explains on the back label the Barlow was a working mans, no frills knife. Many time using left over bone or sub-standard bone for scales with just some lines "scratted" on for better purchase or grip.
On to the knives, there is a smooth parchment bone, a scratted parchment bone, a Ebony wood, a Soup bone and the a fore mentioned up side down parchment bone. All 5 additions have a standard nail nick and a C - C blade stamp with the 3 legs symbol in between the two C's, dating back to Charlies roots!

This is the reversed parchment bone tube from the knife shown just above, with Charlie's comment.

One more post for this addition ;):D:D

Nice to see these all appearing in order, Dave. Thanks for the efforts.
It helps beginning and veteran collectors, and it keeps them in the here and now for me!
Thank you, Thank you!!!

Just to clear things up, I did not draw up the New Day etch, it was done in house at GEC and was between them and Charlie. The first Day's Work etch was a sort of collaboration effort between Charlie, GEC, and myself, as I drew the concept drawing for that knife.

As most of us on this forum know Charlie has a deep affection for Barlows and especially OLD Barlows. Which is self evident by his signature line. :D:D
In my conversations with Charlie I knew these Ancients were on the horizon, I told him that I had done some crude file work and would like an extra Smooth Parchment Bone to scratt. I had plenty of time to try to decide just exactly what type of pattern I wanted to place on the covers. After receiving the knife I discovered that something simple was going to be the way to go because of the space available. I also remembered our Pertinux and her Harlequin TC's so I decided to take after Sara and scratt a different design on each side. Here's to You Sara! You have greater influence than you know!! ;)
Soooooo here is what I came up with, a variation of the factory scratt and something that resembled one of the old Barlows that Charlie had shared with us here on the Traditional Forum.
Perhaps this will induce some of you to scratt your own designs?????;)

The front label has the blade stamp and Ancient on the top with an ancient person sitting in a rocker. There is no bucket, for the 1st time but an otter, it appears, is placed next to the elder. A reference to the acorn not falling far from the tree is the caption just below the scene. :D

The rear label is a testament to Charlie's passion for the old Barlow!

Up next....2015 Rendezvous knives!

Dave

The last addition to the TC line (so far);) were the knives from the 2015 Rendezvous. There were 3 knives released in small numbers at the Annual Event.
2 have a Spey main and 1 a Sheepfoot main all main blades have a long pull. The Spey came in a single and a two blade.
The Sheepfoot main came with a cap lifter, it's own special blade etch and front label, no back label and an obvious disapproval from Charlie hand written on the back!
The special label has a Appaloosa Soup Brew bucket, a Genuine Beerlow Banner and the Boys enjoying a cold one!! :D
IMG_1758.jpg

IMG_1753.jpg

And the disclaimer from Charlie.... I believe it letters stand for.... Charlie NOT responsible for cap lifter!!
IMG_1759.jpg

The 2 Spey bladed knives came with the "A New Day" blade etch in the Ham and Eggs tube

I do believe that brings us up to speed in the TC line...... I look forward to the next addition! :D:D

Well............I'll be!!!
I stand corrected. :confused::confused::rolleyes:

Another shot of the backwards scales and his famous backwards scribing. I was lucky enough to meet CC finally and grab a few straight from him 👍

Thanks for the updates Dave!

Great pics! Nicely photographed, Dave!
Thanks for adding the back-story details as well!!

I like your scratting - especially the front side! Almost like a knife-in-motion! Cool!

I challenged several people to "Scratt-Their-Own":D,
but you are the only taker so far. Nice going!!

Ha Ha! Thanks for showing those knives and the inscription, Jake! My Backward writing is slipping - very rusty!!:p

Nice write up and pictures Dave, I really like the backwards scale ancients, somehow I missed seeing those before.

Thank You all for the comments... Jack, Charlie, philllll, wundergussy ........after all it's a labor of love!;)

Dave

You did a fantastic job on both sides Dave!!

Just to clarify, it's a hound dog sitting at an old Tom's feet... but now that you mention otter, that's all I can see. :D

So, maybe this has been answered (I am still slowly making my way through this whole thread), but I continue to see the characters on the label referred to as Tom and Huck. However, the other boy in this scene is Ben Rogers...
cba6558c524d3473ecce9176de32d783.jpg

Huck isn't in the fence scene at all. In fact, he isn't welcome in the town proper, and Tom is whipped at one point for even talking to him.

If this is a dead-horse scenario, I'll happily delete, as long as someone can point me to an answer!
