What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Sarah those are great pics. I cannot tell much difference no matter what background or combination is presented. The brown still looks the most red when they're all together. It's beginning to feel a lot like the color blindness test with all the dots. However, the individual labeled pics do help. If I do purchase another I'll probably go for the brown or whatever is left.

Doubling back on GEC's "What's Happening Page," I just saw this:

Anyone else catch the caption?

"Are these barlow spears?"

They look too long to be for WLSTs®.

... Whoa.

Uh oh another run coming through already? That will get me in trouble. I'll be lucky to get the couch.

I'm sorry for your continued frustration. The color variations can be very subtle even for those without color-blindness challenges.

The upside is, I believe you'd be happy with either color, wherever a particular example might fall on the red-to-brown spectrum. At least, that's my hope. (Put another way, should you be able to clearly see the differences between the covers of the three knives I've pictured above and choose a color based on its appearance here, there's no way of predicting whether the knife you received would be the same shade of red or brown.)

But again, in real-life lighting under most conditions, the saddle browns are "browner" than the rust reds.

Most of the time.

Okay, I'll hush now.

Good luck. :-)

Sarah, thanks for sharing. A daddy barlow would be the icing on the cake!

BTW, what is the size difference between a daddy barlow and a granddaddy barlow? Just different terms for the same pattern? Also, I've only seen single blade daddy barlows, did they make any with a secondary blade?

Wishing and a hoping for some daddy barlows!

Did someone say daddy barlow? Here's a Scagel daddy barlow, erm...English jack next to one of the TC spears.

The spine of the Scagel is 5/32" thick!

I am gratified that you find that little splinter of a knife useful Fes!
Considering the larger knives you tend to show us!

Carried since before I boiled it way back in December, the "dishonest patina":D has just about been replaced with the real stuff. I too find it infinitely useful. I've put away larger knives, custom knives, and multi-blades, to give this thing a real world (my real world anyway) test. About the only improvement I have done was round the butt slightly, to make it more comfortable. see closeup with an un-altered knife.

Hope You are grinning and know how much you are loved, Sweetie!
You and Your Family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Charlie, I did the same thing to my antique amber clip barlow. The covers were quite sharp at the back end, so I rounded 'em up a bit.
Carries like a dream, now.

I've only had mine a few days but I'm really enjoying carrying it and watching the whole knife change in front of my eyes
