What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I have two more gifts going out in the mail tomorrow. :D

less is more! gotta enjoy them like you and Paul! I do carry that 15 you rehandled quite a bit. that and the 15 lpc Glenn modified for me share quite some scrubs pocket time

i dont blame ya, ive been trimming down some of the GECs as well, if I dont it just becomes a hoard of knives

Wait, I thought "hoard of knives" was the goal here. :D

Put me firmly in the "use 'em" camp. I'm just trying to amass a collection of users. Lots of users. :D

haha, well a collection means focus, hoard sort of means a whole bunch with no direction. in terms of GECs for me, 15s dominant the collection followed by 77s and 48s which are tied. I usually focus only on accumulating those 3 patterns despite the good intentions of other members that i try other ones :D

I've been here since the beginning of Charlie's wonderful TC release and have the very good fortune to own several. They are the focus of my collecting. I will NEVER have them all but I try to get a representation of every release.

Just a note: I have missed one or more of the past releases. I have been able to acquire some through the secondary market. Some took a couple of years and to me were well worth the wait.

This is the first time I've ever had a total release and I am so thankful. Two members in particular were instrumental in this happening. THANKS YOU TWO, you know who you are;)

Here they are...

Peachseed, Smooth and Pony Cut.

Nice trio Paul, Nice to see you with the full set my friend, yo have always stood aside for others all the time- I love seeing you post this pic my friend, can I say a big Thank you to the guy who made it possible for this trio to be at Paul house ( this is NOT to guarantee that it will be that way once I leave the Hilborns later this year though hehehehe ).

Thank you Duncan, and I mean that for the nice words and for the gift of the Peachseed pictured on top. This trio means a lot for three reasons, the Peachseed gifted from you, the smooth bone gifted from another amazing friend and the Pony Cut made available to purchase from another friend. A very, very special trio both the knives and the people that made it happen:thumbup:

Anyone with a passing familiarity with the various GEC jigged bone conversations around here is likely aware of my affection for my GEC #25 in "Horsecut" bone, due to the jigged bone's randomness in cut and coloration.

Now, behold: Horsecut Bone with GEC's own, in-house Pony Cut Bone:

when were these released? that's amazing!!! congrats!

Barrett, Paul, Bob, Factor and Guest. nice pics of nice knives!
I like them used also!!

There are lots of pictures of the odd-handled, hard-to-get TCs. Beautiful as they are, this picture celebrates the Peachseed, and its ancestors!
It took many years for a lot of people to appreciate that Schrade style of jigging!
It is difficult to reproduce the early Peachseed, but this current TC is a fine tribute - and still my favorite of the three current handles!!

Beautiful knives, Charlie

Btw...although I've rarely seen barlow knives with shields, this catalog cut shows an uncommon example. I'm so used to seeing them without shields that the shield seems unusual... like the first person who smiled in a photograph taken in the old West ;) (from a Seth MacFarlane movie)

Jake, those are two rare Barlows!! The shielded knife is made of un-obtainium!
And the curved one is not far behind!!

Just LOVE it Charlie when you get those beautiful old knives out!

The new TC looks right at home with the Golden Oldies- tells you something doesn't it.

Jake - good point- I wonder if it is because the Barlow was originally meant to be a very affordable - dear I say it almost an expendable tool- so the extra cost of a Sheild and pinning was left out- and perhaps the Tradition has kept on- or simply" this is the style of a Barlow No Sheild".

By the way I love the look of that Russell second one down

Spectacular line-up, Charlie! I agree, the peachseed is just PEACHY!

A groovy Peachseed-Sextet!

Interesting to see the different handle options of the current TC run one upon the other.
Is it the same smooth bone on all, "just" burned and jigged differently?

Quite thankful and happy I got this one, great job!

Makes sense. There is a noticeable price difference between them. I saw an interesting old advertisement from a wholesaler describing different packages for resellers and I got the impression that most resellers probably didn't carry the most expensive knives or only carried a few.
