What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Old Miller Bros. barlow with smooth bone handles that, while not appearing new or particularly recent, are likely not original.

Posted this in the daily carry thread but it probably draws more interest here. Old Ulster "Easy Cut" with cracked ice handles.

Great example of why I love Barlows, plenty of room on a bolster to etch things. Love that serpent Atiger!

Charlie, MJ, Atiger and John, such wonderful Barlows I'd say:cool::thumbup:

Now an updated one from way back, you know circa 2014:D not forgotten but had sat in my safe way in the back for sometime. While searching for a car title I was pleasantly reminded that this knife belonged to me and quickly popped the tube top;) and in my pocket with pride...what a BEAUTY, check out the swedge/swage on the pen:cool:

Wow Paul. The red on those handles is absolutely gorgeous. And what a great knife to forget and then find. Superb.

Thanks Factor, I knew I had it but just a nice surprise re-finding it:)

Thank you Ironbut you scored a great one there, I love those covers:cool::thumbup:

Thank you, Paul, but I can't understand how that beautiful Barlow of yours got pushed to the back of the safe & needed finding.:)

Nice TYRON, Atiger, pretty sure I had an eye on that one...can't trust my recent memory, but ask me about something that happened 20 years ago:D

I had such good results trying the "Old Boiley" treatment on my Orchard Gem that I decided to try it on one of the new run TCs! The vinegar leached a lot of the dye out of the bone but I really like how it turned out! Almost looks like the Antique Amber bone from the first run.

While admiring my new Ebony #74 today, I got to thinking about some of the more unusual old Barlows I'd seen in this thread, and I wondered:

Charlie, do you think you'll ever do a curved TC Barlow?

The knives are looking good, thanks for showing!
Interesting that it's possible to leach the dye out of the bone this way, and the patina on the steel is very nice too!
If I'd knew this way of brighten up colours before, I guess I wouldn't have sanded down so many of my jigged bone handles..:(

Thank you! I love what you did with those sanded handles though, especially the scratted bone.

photoshop magic?!

Thank you! I love what you did with those sanded handles though, especially the scratted bone.

Thanks! The scratted one was the first and maybe most meaningful, accentuating the ancient character.
But, for my next bone mod I would love to try your "Old boiley" treatment.
