What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Humint, the Barlows that waynorth had made included both clip point and spear point main blades, with several colors of bone, some ebony, and some soup bone. If you cant get one of those, get in touch with waynorth about his upcoming sheepfoot barlows.

You may also find the GEC Huckleberry Boys knife of interest. It is available with the same blades the Charlow comes with, spear or clip, with or without pen blade, in various handle materials including ebony, cocobolo bare head, and also beautiful smooth ivory bone barehead.

here are examples of smooth ivory bone on a Eureka Jack, soup bone on a Charlow (waynorth's name is Charlie), and jig bone on a Boys Knife with capped head.

If by this you are asking, "moot point"-- done deal(?), Charlie posted this earlier:

:)

As in talked about, very good news that it's in the pipeline.

Will there be a Tortoise-faux or otherwise- option....?:D:thumbup:

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have sent a PM to Charlie. I appreciate your response. Beautiful pictures. I will own this knife someday.

Lucas, you have a vintage "RUSSELL" Grand Daddy Barlow---very nice!!!

Paul

Thank you Paul-

The grumpy old fart that gave it to me in the late 70s said that knife was from the 1800's.

Nice to know the brand, and name...

Now maybe I can find out if the old man was pulling my leg, or not-

No other notches on it. Just the 4 on the top side...

Thanks for the photos, beautiful old Barlow you have. It shares the 3 pin scales and ringed bolster of the new Charlows.

Today I gave the soupbone its first soak in mineral oil, and even more depth and layering and richness showed up.. Loving this stuff

Can anyone here confirm that the fat tree boker 494's were German made and that all the fat tree Boker 494's are carbon steel?

here is a quote of from the description of a Fat Tree Boker 494

"This vintage Barlow knife features two high carbon steel blades, (1) sheep foot blade 2-1/2” long and (2) a 1-7/8” long secondary pen blade.
...
The handles, bolsters, brass spacers, brass frames and steel back-springs are well aligned showing the quality of workmanship of a vintage German made Barlow knife."

Got a lil sumpin'-sumpin' from Charlie yesterday:

Under any other circumstances, I'd be pretty mad if I received a knife with holes in the covers, but I'll let it slide this time...;)

Today on the 'Photo Log of Opportunity' I found this wonderfull 'matched pair' of rare "Soup Bone" Barlows and I'm lovin' 'em!!! :tears_of_joy:

Spectacular Charlie! Thank you my friend!!!:thumbup:

I missed something here!! What is up with Paul!!
Someone email me please!!

Charlie,

There were (are) posts in the "Carl's Lounge" thread at the top of the Traditional forum.

Because they're hard to quote in an email, you can read them here (a heads up from Black Mamba), and then updates from Paul's wife Maria here, then here, here, and finally the post I shortened above, here.

Precîs: Paul had a severe case of Pneumonia that wasn't responding to medical intervention, but has finally turned the corner.

Thanks, Sarah!!
