What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Somethings just go together, a well and honest earned patina on a great Balrow :)

I've been carryin a traditional for 40 plus years and have never enjoyed a knife as much as this one ;)

thanks for the kind words, I also really appreciate your photos
regarding 1st run 2 blade spears, you may be preferring the aesthetic of the nail nick with the pen in front
So, are you carrying your Charlows in separate dedicated pockets?

Im using one of these cover slips so I have the option to toss in pocket with keys and change:

I actually make sure that there is nothing in my pockets that my charlows go into. I usually have one in the watch pocket and one in the main (although I can no longer carry in the watch pockets because the sharper edges of the charlows put holes in them). I've actually been thinking that I really need to get my hands on a nice sheath for my charlows. The sheaths that you included in the above photo look perfect!

That is a great knife with a great looking natural patina! I think I like the 2 blade Charlows (both clip and spearpoint) more so than the single bladed ones. There is something about the extra blade and heft that feels just right to me.

Music to my ears!!:)

All thanks to you Charlie. I had carried a Barlow in the past from time to time but this one---well it's just hard to beat. This to me has everything I've been looking for I guess. I simply could not be happier with a knife...

Thanks burnside, I agree with you, that the two blade just has the right heft/feel and the pen is truly a great blade  It's my work blade as a rule and the large blade is mostly designated to food prep. You my friend have an impressive collection, I never tire of seeing your pictures.:thumbup::thumbup:

Impressive :)

It's the knife that's impressive Jack ;) I laugh because my wife will say "Impressive" when we finish staining a deck and I'll follow up with "me"? the response I get is "no, the deck" :D

this problem is being discussed here:

burnside, I emailed you info about the knife sleeves, I give them away. Anyone who wants one can contact me.

Sorry Paul, but I DID mean the knife! ;) :D

And your high opinion of it, of course! ;)

I absolutely LOVE that blade treatment sitflyer!

I just ordered a batch of 10 of these Charlow sized slip covers, to give away. If anyone reading this would like one, email me your mailing address.

If you want to go to an upholstery shop and have them make you some, the dimensions are 3" wide, 4.5" long, and the seam ends .75" below the top.

I am doing this out of gratitude to Charlie waynorth, who gifted me the pictured, AWESOME, Soup Bone single Clip.

Great to see this thread going strong, I am finding it hard to find time to take photo's, Great to read Pauls statement, 40 years, Jons very busy too!

I just joined the forum, and it took me three days to read through all 83 pages of this thread! I really appreciate the thread and seeing all these pics!

I was some-what surprised to read about Jon_Slider's issues with the edges (swedges) of his Tom's Choice Barlow knives referenced in his link above. I've gotta say that the edges of my Tom's Choice Barlows are pronounced (edgy you might say) but I have certainly not been bitten by any of mine. This is how I carry mine (arrived 6Apr and put in my pocket that day) and as a result, any sharp or potential problem blade edges and knife edges are taken care of. Contents of my right front pocket this morning.

I rarely use my pocket knives for food prep, etc. so I don't have much if any patina to show on the Barlow in the picture - just a lot of scratches, nicks, etc..

Jon_Slider - Very nice distressed (bone marrow) covers on your knife.

Everyone - Nice knives in a lot of great pictures.
