What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

As I posted in the Rendezvous thread I was able to purchase a fantastic collection of vintage Ulster salesman sample barlows. The tang stamp Ulster Knife Co dates them from the mid to late 40's and possibly early 50's. The knives are in mint condition, never used.

The one that really stands out for me is the razor or one arm blade barlow, it is the only one without a pattern number stamped on the back of the tang. I have seen a vintage ad that shows the other 3 knives in the ad but did not show the one arm, I'm thinking it was special order only. I have never seen another.

Thank you Charlie for allowing me to purchase these knives, highlight of my barlow collection.

wow!

When I saw Augie and Stuart’s Redbone Case Barlow’s, I had to get one. I was surprised to be able to locate one so quickly. Now that I have it in hand. I have to say that, although there are many great barlows to be had, nobody makes a good traditional barlow better than Case did in the 70’s!

You are on the right path to a sweet reward.

Thank you Charlie for allowing me to purchase these knives, highlight of my barlow collection.

Actual ancients are so beautiful and precious. What a payload!! Thanks for sharing them.

Thanks. Yes, with kind assistance from @Ratbert . The folder is by Michael Manrow of Toledo, OH. From what I could find, he hand made knives from 1975-2002 and his first knives were often one-of-one. The early ones he hand-engraved his name on the tang (see pic of my knife below). I don't know how many folders he made. I've seen one on the internet; he seems to have gone into bowie-style knives later on. One comment said that he used old ice skate blades for his first knives (?). Still sort of a mystery to me.

I recently added a few more to my TC drawer, actually had to move the group to a bigger drawer so I guess new drawer too SMH. Each were way up on my wishlist, a couple I didn't think to even reach for given their scarcity, but thanks to the good folks here on the porch I was able to deepen my appreciation and my collection of these wonderful little knives.

Have had a few of these Ka-Bar's, picked this one up and it easily has the best stag of the bunch.

I really really like the Drake Well Queen barlows. I'd love to own one, but even moreso I'd like to give one to my dad as he is very interested in the history of the oil and gas industry in PA. They don't seem to come up for sale often?

I feel very fortunate to have come into one of the 2018 Rendezvous TC's and figured I share some photos since there aren't many. Given my interest and fondness for the TC's, and especially the Ancient's, a member who was able to attend and scored one of these beauties was kind of enough to pass it along to me, and as soon as I popped the tube it became an instant favorite. I love the asymmetry of the scales and how the bone seems relatively unpolished. It is thinner than the latest Ancient which I like a lot, and the white bone - spear combo give it a classy and sleek feel. This one is something special and I am grateful to have added it to my pocket.

Logan not positive but those KaBar's were made in the mid 80's and I think still made by KaBar.

The Drake Well's show up on that auction site every few months, one was just listed today, have also found them at knife shows.
