What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Wow! I didn't even know those storm bone TCs existed! Beautiful. Here's another good trad Barlow (not quite in the storm bone league, but one of my favourites). Best to all. MJ.

I posted this knife on the "Totin' Today" thread but thought that I might post it here to see if anyone has seen one like this or has any idea as to who might have made it. Bolsters and mark side tang are stamped: curved RUSSELL over arrow thru R over U.S.A.; has a long swedge that narrows then thickens before the point; 5" closed.

Today is a very good day.

Not only because it is Friday but also because today is the day that I received what I deem to be a treasure. A knife that I wasn't sure would make it into my hands anytime soon. Charlie's Ancient TC in Muscadine Sawcut.

This knife is absolutely wonderful in every way. Very well done, Charlie.

I was debating where to post this... it could go in the “newest addition of traditionals” or “show off your 15’s” or “Black Friday” threads but this Barlow thread is one of my favorites so here it is. This is my new to me ebony clip, two years of waiting, searching and near misses finally paid off thanks to UseitorLoseit UseitorLoseit 86F92972-1E90-4907-9E1A-E99BB4F123C7.jpeg

That is a quintessential pair of pocket knives. A timeless design.

I do not know who made that Stuart but there are a lot of things to like about that Russell . I kind of wonder if it was one of the later ones made by Russell after they changed there Tang Stamp , but I doubt it . The strange thing to me is the Bolster Stamping .

It's a little hard to tell from looking at a picture, but the size of that bolster stamping looks like the exact same stamp was used on the bolster and the tang. Has anyone seen that before?

Beautiful bunch there! I particularly like the one with the stepped bolster! It looks so cool. I only wonder why does it have a stepped bolster unlike other barlows? I'd be interested in hearing the reasoning and history behind that! Awesome knives though thanks for sharing!

The bolsters are a variation on the barlow design, although not common they do show up throughout barlow history. Gives a classier look in my opinion.

Wow, those are just stunning! I hope to acquire a clip point TC some day. Works of art!

Thanks, r8shell and all others, for the help in identifying the origins of my knife. If you click on the pictures, they should expand so that you can see the stamps a bit better. The tang stamp appears to have the letters are spaced slightly further apart than the bolster stamp, though that may be a function of the difference between flat v. curved surfaces. Otherwise, it's the same sized stamp, according to my calliper.
