What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Not a Dog Head but a Kabar barlow nonetheless...

Augie Augie @Duckdog

When I saw Augie and Stuart’s Redbone Case Barlow’s, I had to get one. I was surprised to be able to locate one so quickly. Now that I have it in hand. I have to say that, although there are many great barlows to be had, nobody makes a good traditional barlow better than Case did in the 70’s!
I've been on the lookout for one too, though I prefer a single blade. that's a looker you have there!

That’s a great one Leslie, besides quality construction the gorgeous red bone Case used has never been equelled, sure wish someone would find a way to make it again.

Thanks Augie Augie , and I read about the incredible barlows you bought in Titusville. I cannot wait to see more photographs of each of them over the coming weeks and months.

Talking about Case Redbone; it seems to me that if GEC would make a dark red dye version of their Appaloosa Bone, it might come close to replicating what Case did in the 70’s. I am sure they could copy that coloration if they wanted to. I wonder if they have given it any thought. What do you think Charlie? waynorth waynorth Have you ever considered trying to duplicate old Case reddish/brown mottled bone on one of your SFO’s?

BTW, Trevor Ablett, and now Michael May, are responsible for a lot of good traditional barlows.

Thank you Duncan, glad you are enjoying it for the memories, same every time I look at the cutting board or the New Holland you gifted me, a great time that we will never forget.

As I posted in the Rendezvous thread I was able to purchase a fantastic collection of vintage Ulster salesman sample barlows. The tang stamp Ulster Knife Co dates them from the mid to late 40's and possibly early 50's. The knives are in mint condition, never used.

The one that really stands out for me is the razor or one arm blade barlow, it is the only one without a pattern number stamped on the back of the tang. I have seen a vintage ad that shows the other 3 knives in the ad but did not show the one arm, I'm thinking it was special order only. I have never seen another.

Thank you Charlie for allowing me to purchase these knives, highlight of my barlow collection.
