What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I just picked up my first TC Barlow and I'm hooked. I have a few UN-X-LD and Nf stamped GECs and wanted a "special" TC stamped Barlow to complete the set. After fondling/googling this walnut Tom's Choice for the last week or so, I am hoping to find the walnut spear and sheepfoot TC Genuine Barlows. I thought I read a post near the beginning of this thread that there was talk about Charlie doing a Barlow with the UN-X-LD or Nf stamp. Did that ever happen?barlow.jpg

Bill has always loved the early Remington craftsmanship. Remember his first knives in 2006 - 2007 had hard pulls and resembled closely antique Remingtons?? A worthy approach to knife creation IMO!!

Thanks for that information Charlie, good to know. Did you have input on the first TC spear blades or just went with what Bill wanted to do?

I left the final shape to Bill on that one, but it was influenced by a New York Barlow I presented to him!!

Thanks Charlie, I know Bill has a love for the vintage knives watching and talking with him at the Rendezvous, he really studies them and it shows in GEC's knives. That spear you and he came up with on that first one is one fine spear blade.

Ha Ha!! A real Beerlow!!:DView attachment 1148067 View attachment 1148068 Your "Soup Nazi" statement and lament had me looking in my archive, AchiveMoto!
Bill made some (just a few) Barlows to pull my leg for the Rendezvous in 2015.
My disclaimer stands for "Charlie Not Responsible For Cap Lifter!!"
And he filled Tom's whitewash bucket (and Huck) with ASB beer!!
Pretty funny!!:D

THE GRAIL!

The scratches are on my Scanner's glass ; not the knives- with apologies!! Thanks for all the likes everyone!! You can't go wrong with that Barlow! It is slim in the one-blade version, but has that nice "A" clip blade!!:)

Thanks to a tip from Dean, I scored a Case Barlow I can love!!! They got it right IMO!!View attachment 1151022 View attachment 1151023
Compared with a "wabi-sabi" untouched Case XX from the 1960s View attachment 1151024 View attachment 1151025Makes me willing to try Case's stainless steel blades!!

Great to see the new Case barlows turning out so well! I have a brown sawcut bone in CV steel on order and the more I see pics of the other offerings, the more excited I get!

Titusville, Sheffield, Charlie and Jack :D Legends!
