What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Thanks to a tip from Dean, I scored a Case Barlow I can love!!! They got it right IMO!!View attachment 1151022

Great photo, Charlie. I decided to try one with some of my turquoise. The eagle was something I got when I visited Bisbee, AZ in 1984 and gave it to my parents. My Dad gave it back to me just before he passed in 2011 so it has additional meaning now.

Beautiful image Dean. So I'm assuming that is Bisbee turquoise? Gorgeous piece.

Thank you, Dwight. Yes it's Bisbee. I bought it in a shop in Bisbee after touring a local mine. At that time turquoise was cheap in Bisbee and the cost went up substantially the further you got away - like Phoenix and Tucson.

Nice pairs Ron and John!! Great image Dean - a special Eagle!!:thumbsup:

Thank you, Charlie.

A Methuselah Barlow!! A late 60s Case XX that has seen some hard work!! A gift from a loyal BFer a few years ago, it's been patched, rather neatly! And holds (came with!) great edges!! All I've done for years is strop it!! Lowering the kicks to correct some blade "peek-out" would have lowered/weakened the springs too much, so I ground two facets to create speys and drop the points. Works a treat!! A double spey Barlow!! Pictured here with some of my oldest beads. Coast Salish shale , and Baltic Butterscotch Amber, both thousands of years old!!Methuselah 1.jpg Methuselah 2.jpg
Thanks Randy @r redden!!!!

Hi All. Have been admiring all the English Barlow and other photos. Here are a few Sheffield Barlows. The one on the left has ox horn covers and a worked back. Second from left has ram’s horn covers. Third from left has regular delrin covers and is a brand new two blade given me by my father years ago. Fourth from left is a lambsfoot I picked out when in Sheffield a long while back. The late Trevor Ablett etch is still faintly visible. Finally, the knife on the far right was my late grandfather’s - a Joseph Rodgers that saw good use. My father has a two blade eyewitness given him in 1958. I’ll post a picture of that one when I find it. Best to all. MJ.

Beautiful collection, especially the TW Ablett. I will never give up looking for one. Rare as hens’ teeth.:)
