What might be some rookie mistakes newbies like myself might make?

Don't buy from Liu Kang.

Don't bring up the noss videos.

Try not to go all in and wipe out your retirement account.

Amen brother! Amen!

Oh, And remember this:
If a Busse kin don't catch your eye while it's released you might as well go ahead & buy it anyways, because it's the one you won't be able to live without when the market value goes up. How's the old addage go? The stone that the builder refuses shall be the head cornerstone?...

The "apprenticeship" on Busse blades probably begins by learning the many "models" ... then sifting through those to find which ones "catch your eye" ... then learn the prices from new and what they seem to go for on the secondary market ... the search engine is your friend ... then also look at the schedule for shows and whether you can get to them.

Buying old models direct from Busse at shows such as Knob Creek saves you a veritable fortune ... learn which models are going to be popular for the secondary market also helps as you can buy three and sell two and more or less cut the cost of the "keeper" right down ...

Some buy 3 for the pension fund and hang on to them to release later ... a user, a spare and a safe queen are a common theme.

Handling blades has already been mentioned ... I ended up with around 20 or more knives because I decided to "buy and try" because I could'nt get access to pick them up and see which felt right ... hence my comments about the shows ... saving up and doing a show early doors would have saved me a lot of money ...

Some knives though just seem to fit the bill right from seeing them ... you know you won't be disappointed ...

Reviews on the forum here are always good to go back over ... and new questions are always good for a learning curve ...

Realise that many here are of a different ilk ... some are collectors and some are users and many are both ... you have to allow for everyone ... and realise it is'nt always appropriate to ask some collectors how the knife "chops" or otherwise works in the field if they are clearly a collector.

Fom a user's perspective and comparing models ... everyone is a fan of a particular knife ... you will find your favourites in due course ... but the honest answer to many questions posted about which knife is the best etc ... is that they are often all capable and "good" ... realising this early on can help if all you want is to find a "package" of blades which cover the size and use spectrum ... otherwise you can end up spending too long deciding which knife to take with you when you want to go out to have some fun and because of the sheer number owned you can develop an aversion to your credit card statements :D

Thank you all for partaking in my inquiry.
I think going to a show will be a goal of mine, just hope he's around/near California or surrounding states, I'll have to look into that.
I tend to collect out of habit and hobby, but I'm hoping that I'll want some Busse for users.

User & B11 are synonomous...:D

As a fellow cali resident, from what I can tell you might as well start prepping for Knob Creek or Blade (or basically anywhere east of the Rocky mountains) if you want to meet Jerry and the crew. I've been on the look out since I got turned on to Busse knives in late 2010 and have yet to see any real representation out here. After seeing how much fun everyone had at Blade a couple weeks ago, I've made up my mind to get out to Atlanta for next year's fun. The releases at this and last year's Blade show were pretty amazing - I feel that just being able to handle all them purrrty knives while meeting the rest of the family would be worth the trip alone.

To miss another year of Blade and Busse family fun would constitute a level of masochism I am not yet prepared to inflict upon myself!

Keep us posted if you happen to learn of an event that I and other west coasters may not be aware of :)

Be patient......shop around.

Ask around, there are quite a few Ole Hogs that will give advise, information, helpful tips....dirty jokes....etc.

Ask again, ask a second person, ask a third. A few PMs can help save money, track a knife, plant seeds for future sales.

Don't IMPULSE buy!!!!! Watch the Market....it is a seasonal.....prices fluctuate.

Ask around some more.......information flows like alcohol here.

Buy what is for sale 'cheap' directly from Busse or the Company store. Unless someone has a panic sale, you will never see the knife cheaper than the new price. This is due to the limited production of particular models.

Don't be scared to use them to see if they 'fit' you. A lightly used Busse doesn't greatly depreciate in value compared to other knives. A heavily used busse still doesn't greatly depreciate.

And one more thing... they are all bigger than they look in pictures. I'll never forget opening the box to discover my first Battle Mistress (hook-set). I was in absolute awe! I had never held such an awesome chunk of steel... the $450ish price that seemed extraordinarily pricey at the time I placed the order instantly became insignificant.

So pull up a chair and have some Kool-aid! It's the best...

Indeed, as Gravelface says, watch the market.

Lurk on the exchange. Spend enough time there that you know when a deal is a good deal.

If you spend enough time browsing the exchange, you will be able to pounce like an Infi Ninja on a deal.

Welcome, lisantica. :)
Please don't take this wrong, but it's a little odd seeing you here...I'm used to drooling over your pix while lurking in the CRK forum! :D
I hope that you find what you want and if I can help you with some Busse info, please feel free to drop me a PM.

Good Hunting!

Thank you Jaxx. It's true, the majority of my posts are over there on CRK, but I decided I wanted a fixed blade that I wouldn't be fearful of using and Busse seemed to fit the bill. Besides, if I bought a CRK fixed blade I'd end up collecting it and not using it, so coming over here has been a good decision, very helpful folks and I love knife people who are enthusiastic about what they own.

Look a a Whole Lot of Pictures, it may help you to define what you Desire.

Do Not get in a Hurry, Hurry will cost you More Money.

Once you have a few, Redefine your Desires.

Buy Band-aids and keep them Handy, having the Band-aids handy will help you to be more Careful and More Careful will help you to use less Band Aids.

Figure out if by Definition you are a "Collector" or an "Accumulator"

If you have Fair amounts of Money to throw at this, Then I will give you my Most Common advice that I have so far given to people that buy knives from me: Slow Down, Be Careful, Pay attention, the Thrill is in the Hunt with the Eventual Purchase of just what you were looking for at a Reasonable Price.

When you can, Deal with the Factory, or the Busse Store, or at least with people that you have some reason to Trust the Judgment of, that means people on the Forums more so than People on Auction Sites.

Good Hunting!

LOL I was going to say the same thing; it's great to see that your interests have led you here to the Busse forums Lisantica! Of the INFI I've purchased and sold (around 10-15, maybe?), I don't think I've ever lost more than $25 re-selling a knife (not including shipping costs). Some knifes you can even get for far below cost, if your patient, and know what your looking for (and buying around xmas time lol). Only advice I could give is don't ever buy INFI on credit, because it will become habit-forming, and don't worry too much about cost, because for the most part, you will get your money back if you sell it. Oh, and I hope you've never had problems with alcoholism; this subforum may cause you to relapse:D Cheers!

I appreciate the added input, definitely going to have to try some patience (something I'm not all that good at), but I see there are lots of models to choose from so that will slow me down.
I must admit I can't hardly concentrate right now because my first Busse arrives today! Life will never be the same! :D

Lycosa, it'll be another 10 hour wait and in typical expecting a package style, the post truck will be late today.....not that I'll be waiting at the curb or anything :p
