What might be some rookie mistakes newbies like myself might make?

My biggest mistake was buying waaay too many knives when I didn't truly know what I wanted! If I had one recommendation, I would say suss out your priorities with your Busses. If you want to chop, look at a Mistress. If you want to slice and something for finer chores, look at a BAD or Bear Cub. If you want a "jack of all trades," look at the Steel Heart lineup, BOSS Jack, Badger, ect. You will save a lot of time and $$$ if you prioritize what you will actually use your knife for. Either way, its fund checking out all of the models in person! Welcome to the addiction; say goodbye to your wallet.

There are some ridiculously nice people on this forum and if you loiter around you will pick up a few pearls of wisdom which will help in your decision making. I think Brendan in the last post gave a few already.

Rock on.

202 is correct. :)
What will you "use" the Busse(s) for?
I had a gorgeous BATACLE that I never carried. I do now EDC my PS.

These three are inbound, I think the top two will arrive today!
Game Warden
Badger Attack TAC - camo done by Garth :)
Satin Jack TAC

Those are awesome. Considering you got a rare handle/coating combo on the Satin Jack and a rad camo on the Badger Attack TAC, I doubt that you overpaid that badly. Looks like an Urban Grey Warden with Mashed Cat Kydex too.

Thank you Soulrack223, yes I think you're right Urban Grey and Mashed Cat! I have no regrets on these purchases, but I think my next purchase will be direct from Busse.

That drip camo on the BATAC is awesome, used to have a Skinny ASH with that pattern.

Thank you M67, I must confess I bought that one as a shelf/safe queen.
Not my photo, but it's the exact one that's incoming:

They all are good choices to me to  Easily moveable if need be and great user potential if you want to. The Game Warden is a really handy knife ... for me that would be my "top slot" choice to regard as my "first Busse" and make a "user" out of it for the rest of my life ... when the coating wears a bit and you have read a few tutorials on stripping a blade you can always give it a home made satin finish ... stuff like that bonds you to a blade ... or just keep the worn coating and look at it with pride as being used plenty ...

Yes PeterPHWS, the Game Warden was my first Busse purchase and the plan is to use it and carry it on all my hikes. I just realized I need to buy a belt, another search begins!

My advice: Wait. Know/figure out what you want and get over FOMO. If you are patient, you will find deals on the exchange. Both of these knives combined cost me around $1250 in my hand.

Love the BATAC, I had that in my watch list.

 Wow! You my friend, have gotten some deals.

Congratulations on your new Busse's and welcome. Some excellent advice in this thread.

Eric (The Bully :)) Isaacson was a Busse employee and moderator here for many years and a major Busse collector in his own right. Earlier this year he took a leave of absence, hopefully temporary because I miss his illuminating posts, his enthusiasm, and his upbeat attitude.

Eric gave the best advice I’ve ever heard on buying Busse’s: If you buy Combat Grade (standard, coated blade) knives direct from Busse during the initial offering from the Busse website, and wait at least until that model has been discontinued before you sell, you will lose the minimum on resale and often will make money. If you’re not yet familiar, offerings on the Busse website usually last anywhere from a few weeks up to about a year, so this is not typically a long-term commitment.

I’ve been buying and selling Busse’s for almost 15 years, and in my experience Eric’s advice is spot on. I’ve rarely bought a CG model when it was offered by Busse and then lost money on resale, and I’ve certainly made more money than I’ve lost when following this advice. I’ve lost money on satin-finished blades, special editions, limited editions, and on rarer pieces I’ve bought on the secondary market, though I still buy all of these from time-to-time knowing the risk. But buying CG knives direct from Busse, then waiting at least until that model has been discontinued before re-selling, is almost foolproof in terms of not losing money.

Very good information Will, thank you.
My postal truck should be rolling up within the next hour and a half, can't wait!

I'm thinking about giving the postman a big, full-on, hog heaven kiss, right on the smackers :D :p
