What multitool or SAK did you buy today

Got this Coast boxcutter while waiting for my Christy, a Hunter, Climber, and Super Tinker, but the two jewels of this acquisition, I think, are the Lilly Pharma Vic Classic (Not Classic SD, note the lack of a screwdriver tip on the file), with emergency blade (which I got a few more of to be safe, in case I want to make some cool modifications), and this beauty called the Grafter, originally an Ecoline model, now reprised with just the chisel-ground Wharncliffe and multicolor handles... and this beautiful, choiled, double-edged budding knife. I intend for this to be one of the knives in my Super-91, after my testing, of course. I also have a wharncliffe version of this, aka, sharpened back end bit, coming. Cannot wait to see how it cuts.

I scored a used 91mm Ranger on the cheap side. It needs a bit of cleaning and a scale swap. What color of scales would look best on a Ranger?

Available choices are Red, Red+, Sapphire (blue transparent), Sapphire+, Black+, Blue+, or a combination of two colors (red/black, black/blue, sapphire/blue, sapphire/red, sapphire/black).

I wanted to try a Ranger for its Saw/Scissor combo + 5 backtools. Nice score. Do you think the 5 back-tools will see a lot of use?

I say sapphire/blue or sapphire/red.

I say sapphire/blue
I do like that combo. The question is whether to use the + scale with the pen slot, and which side should be the transparent one. Front sapphire / back blue, or front blue / back sapphire? Pen slot or no pen slot?

Do you think the 5 back-tools will see a lot of use?
In my case, yes. For you? I couldn't say. Only you would be able to answer that.

I am also slightly biased in favor of backside tools regardless of the frequency of their use. To me a SAK without back tools is a bad thing. Not making use of the space in the back is a waste, which is why I don't like models such as the Recruit. I will give a free pass to models like the alox Bantam and the Cadet because they are so small and thin. The advantages of their compactness outweigh the fact that they don't have back tools.

I haven't fallen in love with the transparent models as much, some do. If you like 'em, I'd go for it on the front, if not, back. Definitely a yes on those plus scales, they rule! I have been finding myself wanting a pen on my SAK on more than one occasion, particularly some smaller ones (84mm and below). I keep screwing up and forgetting to order extra tweezers/toothpicks/the pin/plus scales, all of that stuff, the last few times I ordered from any kind of retailer that has that stuff. I think red or white toothpick/tweezer would be a good combo for most of mine in the white style.

What do you use them for? To me, the tool-names are all suggestions, and I've found they're much more versatile than simply a cap-lifter for example, that's why I ask. I'm trying to think if 4-layer 91mm is the largest I can EDC, or if I can handle one more layer, because I'm looking at the new Explorer I got, and am loving the toolset, especially the three "base" scale-tools, with the Phillips added to the layer tools, and the loupe. (These models, oh man, they're just so clean, I love them!)

20220814_111844.jpg

I am thinking about what layer I'd have to give up, and it's just hard to choose... (Give up, because I'm deciding what base model I want for my super 91mms and I am unsure if a Spyderco blade and SAK blade will fit in the same layer... tip is thinner, so maybe). That's why I am asking around about the 5 layer, 5-backtool models. Normally I just wait and see what is useful to me and what isn't, but I'm trying to expedite this process because it will be a permanent choice that I will have to live with when I do choose my base model. :)

Ever heard of a Yeoman?

It's an Explorer in 3 layers.

Magnifier/Phillips
Scissors
Knife/Combo

Because of the combo tool, you can condense the bottle and can opener layer into the knife layer, making the 4 layer Explorer into a 3 layer Yeoman. You also have to sacrifice the awl.

The Yeoman is discontinued but you still get people who build them as a custom SAK.

With the explorer reduced to 3 layers you can have room again to add a 4th layer.

I was about to ask a similar question on the modding thread, I was trying to figure out which, if any, tools could be condensed in such a way. Thank you for this information. Very interesting idea, may ask about it more in that thread.

Victorinox has overtook me much like Spyderco had in the beginning of my knife career, and I can't get enough, haha. Got some great new ones today, though. Last couple days, wanted to wait for them to all trickle in, and I actually need some help identifying the model of two of them.

I will start simply, with the red cellidor models I got, all 91s. These were inspired part by my desire to start scale-swapping without risk to my good scales, partly to try differing models and tool-sets to see what I like, what I want and don't, and how much is too much, in preparation for my "Super-Saks", part because I am coming around to appreciate the classic red, and part old-fashioned SAK love!

Here we have a Climber, a (??? Mystery SAK, what is that, help below, I have a few ideas), Huntsman and a Tinker Deluxe. All of them are great and absolutely solid, except the Huntsman! Not only are the tools very gummy, hard-to-pull and no snap (that can be fixed), it feels "tinny", like, if I tap it against any other SAK of any size, it goes "bzzz" like if you hit something with a loose spring in it. I think I may return it to seller, or ask Victorinox, unless I can figure out what's up with this tinny hollow feeling (no other 91 feels like this), I am suspicious.

But, what is the second one??? Pic below. It was sold as a "Genuine Swiss Army Knife" and it does seem to be that indeed - it is solid, all is right with it, it's real, but I think it is part of the "Standard" series, which I don't know about. The best I could find is on the SAKwiki page for the Spartan, it has a pic of this knife, but with a graphic/HIKER displayed on it + Ecoline scale, and it says "Hiker from the Canada series - but it is actually a Standard!" (Love all these little series and versions marketed across the world, Ecoline (which seems to be making a comeback??), Wenger, Delemont...) Anyone know?

Also, got a beautiful new Explorer, as well as another Escort. Love the Finnish collab SAKs 😍 But, you know what I love even more? The seemingly reprised Ecoline models in the budding and grafting department. I got one old one, called a "Grafter" as well as a new one, called the Floral, which comes in multiple colors. But that Felco knife... the one with the backside sharpened for pruning similar to the Grafter clip-point, what is that model??? This is called a "special double-edged grafting blade" by Vic, but what about that "Sheepsfoot", as they call their chisel-ground Wharncliffes (easier to differentiate)?

20220814_133907.jpg

In addition to that, got four new models of 58mm, but I have some questions. I know the Lilly is a Vic Classic Emergency (no SD tip) and the Pharmacy Knife is a very rare, custom-ordered 58mm from what I understand. Also, the Pepcid Rover.
I do not understand one though, - I understand the Lortab is a Victorinox Princess, thought it was an Escort, but no, it's a Princess (no SD tip on nail file). But, these models should not have tweezers/toothpick. Do you think some were made with them, or was this the result of a scale-swap?

All of these were used, so mods are possible. I'm just trying to figure out my collection! This is great, I'll be able to scale-swap my way to perfection, I just need a Mini-Champ II!

So, yes, in total... what is that "Standard/Canadian Hiker" with blades, openers, corkscrew, awl, and T/T, what is the Felco (if that is even a specific one, check Grafter page), what is the deal with the Princess being able to have Toothpick/Tweezers, scale swap or just Vic makes a lot of models? And what is that "Rambler" Pepcid model with the nail-cleaner tip file? I just wanna know what models these can be. Thanks for any help! I am very excited.

Holy cow, NICE haul!

I got lucky and snagged the last s111 at one of my local knife stores

I bought 2 more Rangers. 🤦‍♂️ One is to use and one is for parts. I also got a used Compact and a vintage Explorer, both in excellent condition. I'm going to ruin them both by taking them apart. 😢 What is wrong with me? 😩

fun little bunch of pharma knives. I have one - a green classic-sized golfer, advert knife for Cipro HC - the antibiotic.

Let me know if you want it.

I ordered an Alox Bantam this morning.

I understand, I bought a second, red Super Tinker, a bunch of SD's, a Huntsman (that is the only bad one that is going for return), a Tinker Deluxe... a real, but unnamed Victorinox knife... I swear, the model is nameless even according to SAKwiki, a 91mm model. 😂

Indeed, I am loving them, especially the different types of tools on some of these strange 58mms! Thanks much for the offer, and I shall keep you in mind when it is again time to buy a new Vic, as that model sounds quite fun, I do not have it yet! :)

New additions:

-Bladeless Jetsetter
-MiniChamp Alox

The Jetsetter will be great with my scissor-less & Alox SAKs.

& this Alox MiniChamp, well, I think the M.Champ has the most utility of the 58s, & I just had to complete the MiniChamp set, it also looks great.
