What other outdoor hobbies

...What do I do with my son when I have to go answer nature's call?

I just let him hang out till I get back.

What happens when your horse takes off?

That's why I hung him on a horse with someone else. Just to let you know I wouldn't leave him on a horse by himself even if it was tied up, too many things could happen. I hung him on the saddle of one of the guys I was riding with.

Horseback riding looks like great fun. I've only been on a horse three or four times and I really loved it. What a cool way to be outside with your family. I love that harness system you've got going. Your son must love it too.

Now I've got to look into lessons. We've got a family that runs a stable down the road. Maybe my 2 year old could take lessons with me and my wife.

On a side note, a number of my students (2nd graders) ride and I really appreciate how they are made to learn all about the care and upkeep of a horse. I dig the way a 7 year old is required to take care of their tack and muck out stalls. I believe it gives them an advantage over other kids who never have to lift a finger all throughout their childhoods.

Horses are a great way to teach responsibility. Most people don't realize how much work they are but there are also a lot of rewards that go with the work. That harness thing is called a baby bjorn ( no I don't know how to say it) and it is actually designed for the baby to ride facing towards the parent but my son was never happy in that position so we turned him around and then realized it would work for riding horses and ATVs.

He loves to ride both and anything outside. In the house he will spend most of his time looking outside. I've got a feeling we'll be doing a lot more camping and riding soon.

I used to be an avid mountain biker, and still dabble from time to time. Eventually I will get back into it in earnest.

Other than that, aside from hiking and camping, I enjoy:

snowshoeing,

Excellent pics!
I really don't like winter but i have to say that winter scene is a totally awesome!
Same for the canoeing pic!
Great composition there!

I used to be a decent photographer but haven't done much in last couple of years. lately i've been looking at new Digital SLR's.
I still have my old Canon A1 and accessories. I might buy a EOS series and get an adapter so i can use my old FD lenses.
My Uncle was a professional photographer for 30+ years and swears by his Nikons. Maybe i'll just switch brands, lol!

I'd love to get one of those frames. I'd probably keep it simple as a singlespeed too, but I love the way that I could deck it out as a tourer, mountainbike or whatever I want. Great design! Good price too.

Right now I ride an old Cannondale Beast of the East frame (who said aluminum wears out?) with old as dirt components. I still use thumbshifters. I'm kind of a Retro Grouch by default. I'd love to get some disc brakes and a full suspension ride, but my bank account can't take it. I also ride an old Bridgestone road bike with moustache bars. It's more of an around town bike not a racer and I love it.:D

They are awesome. Surly makes kick ass products.

You should go way old school with that Cannondale, and get rid of those gears. :p

Seriously though, sounds like we have the same taste in bikes. Im retro too. I could probably afford full suspension, but Ill take my singlespeed hardtail any day. My Karate Monkey is gonna be singlespeed 29er, with ridgid carbon fork.

Thanks man. Sounds like you guys have had your fair share of snow out East this year! That snowshoeing pic was taken on the morning after the first big snowfall on Blue Mountain. The underbrush and saplings were completely laden with snow, which made for a very surreal environment.

I use a Canon PowerShot G5 for my photos. It is surprisingly durable and it takes excellent wilderness shots. I confess to being a complete amateur when it comes to photography. My sister, on the other hand, is a professional film-maker and photographer, and she carries around more cameras and lenses than I do knives - which is saying something.

All the best,

- Mike

Im an avid mountain biker. Have been since I was 9 years old.

You mountain bike too?!? Dang, we do need to plan a trip some time. What are you riding right now? Currently I'm on a 29er Redline Monocog. With the new baby, I never get to go riding but I use to go 4 days a week.

EDIT: I just saw another one of your posts. The Karate Monkey is amazing. I love the bike. Once you go 29er, you never go back. Fully rigid, single speed is ideal for Missouri.

Spearfishing for me, love it! If I had more money I'd add sky diving...but that gets expensive...

I want to get into fishing, mountain biking, and outdoor photography soon :)

That would be cool! Actually me and brandon were talking about doing a ride/camp along the way kinda thing along the Katy trail for this summer... I have a buddy who rides a monocog who said he would be interested in going too. Ill keep ya posted....

Currently I ride a singlespeed that I built from a Specialized frame. Lots of the parts came from Misfit Psycles out of Canada, and I also ordered quite a few things from DansComp BMX... Its a sweet bike, I really like it...

Heres a pic

I really love Specialized bikes, I have been into them for years. I wish they made a frame with horizontal dropouts... The Surly singleator on it does a good job though, and is fully adjustable...

One thing I did when building this was I got alot of the stuff from my local shop. Or I had him order it through the company so he could make some $$, for letting me use his tools when I needed something I didnt have.... Support your local shops boys!!

Fishing, bird and animal watching, botany, hiking, camping, hunting (when I live in an area that supports it - haven't done any since moving to L.A.! :grumpy: ), camp cooking.........

Basically, if it gets me outdoors, I enjoy doing it!

Your Specialized looks like a fun ride. Misfit bikes are really wild. Those cranks are supercool, as is that beefy stem.

Maybe I should strip down my Cannondale. Hmmmmmmm. Tempting.

I spearfish where I am as often as I can. I love it. aside from spearfishing, i love:
camping
shooting (though in inner city sydney, i don't get up to that much... :( )
diving
knives
Controllable fires ( gotta be careful here, very easy for bushfires to start )
fishing,
boating
woodwork.

Spearfishing sounds like great fun... unfortunately it's not legal for me in my area.

NO, this is not a racially-motivated statement, just a fact about the laws in my beloved home state.

You're a lucky man :) I haven't gone spearfishing up here on the mainland USA yet, but used to go as often as I could back home in Hawaii. Looking to get started up here when I get the time and money for it...

James, you should do it the next time you're in an area that allows it  It can be just as much fun or as peaceful as you want it to be.
