What SAK are ya totin' today?

Recently I've acquired three new Alox models - Pioneer, Farmer, and Cadet - all in silver (mostly to keep costs down). I find that I really like the Cadet more than I thought I would. It's small, thin, and very pocketable. I think the nail file also works on phillips screws. Great for urban carry. I seem to prefer carrying the Cadet because it rides unnoticed in my pocket. By contrast, I definitely notice the Pioneer and especially the Farmer in my pocket. Longer and thicker knives. I don't have the Pioneer X, and I doubt I'll get one. I don't have much need for scissors. A blade usually works for me in a pinch. I like your idea about combining a Pioneer X and a Tinker! I think that would be quite cool! As far as sizes go, even though I'm a tall slender gal (6'2"), I seem to prefer smaller knives across the board, no matter the brand. So I love the 84mm Vics and Wengers. I'm quite drawn to them. I'm always trying to reduce bulk and weight in what I carry on my person. I'm unsure if they're available in 91mm. I think probably not. The few Wengers I have were purchased new online in the last year or so, so they're still out there...even new.

I have a green Cadet, after hearing so much about it I caved and went for it. I like it, but I prefer my tinker for how it feels in hand and its capabilities. I love how the Alox fades and ages though, almost like a SAK patina, so I've been looking into alox handles. I actually tried to grind the nail file on my cadet into a pen blade, but I haven't finished it yet. Do the handles on your pioneer feel like the classic cellidor handles when in hand? That's another concern is that the alox might be a bit too thin to be comfortable. Again, the only Alox I've had is my cadet, whereas I've grown up with cellidor SAKs.

This is what is drawing me to the cadet; the capability of the nail file to deal with small phillips screws that are everywhere these days. can't remember the last time I had to deal with a flat screw.

Nope, the handles on my Pioneer do not feel like cellidor. They are much thinner in hand. I think a lot of people gravitate to the Farmer (and now the Pioneer X) because it's thicker and is more substantial in hand and grip. I like the thinness of the Cadet and Pioneer, but I also really like my Spartan, Tinker, Camper, and Climber. It just depends on my mood and my agenda for the day. Today, for example - Cadet in my watch/coin pocket, Spyderco Dragonfly 2 clipped to the same pocket, and a Case small stockman in another pocket. [emoji4] I do wish I had opted to get at least one colored alox model for the reasons you described. I like the way they look with some wear.

I can't wait for the winter when I can wear my jeans with a watch pocket! That was one of the reasons I bought my cadet. I wish Victorinox still produced the Cadet 2, with a pen blade instead of a nail file, but oh well! Maybe on the exchange one day.

Permanent resident in my pocket. Pioneer Pruner Harvester (I think that's the official name)

How rare are these? I'd love to pick up a backup.

Not too rare. The harvester is no longer in production but you can find them in the high $30 to low $40 range.

Good call on the nail file as small ph driver. That's what sealed the deal for me on a Sportsman, although there were other reasons (wanted 84 mm for casual carry, needed corkscrew, prefer celidor, found one cheap :) .) I've used mine a lot on battery covers, etc.

I love the Sportsman! It's right up there with the Spartan, Tourist, Cadet, and Recruit as my top 5 favorites. The Sportsman has everything I need and nothing I don't. My Cadet has been getting some serious pocket time because it's a very recent acquisition. It's a hard decision every morning as to whether or not to carry the Sportsman or Cadet. I love both!

And yes, I agree with you, Irona, about looking forward to cooler weather so that I can wear jeans more often. I have been wearing jeans a bit lately because we've been inundated with tons of rain here in central Texas, about 10 inches in the past 3-4 days. This has cooled off our temps from the low 100s to the upper 70s. Yay! The heat will return soon, I'm sure. Can't wait for fall to get here!

Check this out if you haven't already, here's a SAK from the 70's or 80's with a clip pen blade, and a victorinox tang stamp!

I sure do wish the cellidor models' awls were as effective as the Alox models' awls. A lot of it is that they fold out from the back, but a lot of it's also the way they're ground. The awl is the tool I use the least on the cellidor SAKs. I love the Spartan/Tinker, but I don't like having a tool on my SAK that I don't use or that's less effective than it should be.
