What size blade do you EDC and why?

Where I live there is no legal max. I carry 3"-4"... I find under 3" a bit small for many cutting tasks, even though they might work , they just are a hassle to do it well and easily, and frankly for me the point of carrying is to make things easier.

4" tends to be the upper limit since its tough to find folders over 4" that don't look "scary" and a 4" fixed is plenty large to carry discretely.

Finally I agree that people notice style before they notice size. Also people tend to notice blade mass more. A 3.5" slipjoint has a much smaller overall blade than sometyhing like a Zero Tolerance with a 3.5: blade because the depth of the blade is less than half, I also notice that the colour and scales are a big factor. Jigged bone, or MOP is less scary than, brown/tan/white micarta/G10 which is less scary than black or camo...

Around town my normal edc is a zt0300 0301, 3 3/4" blade. My edc folders are generally as close to 4" blade length as I can get.

I have a Benchmade 275 Adamas comingin in the morning, and plan to pick up either a Benchmade 810 contego or, an 860 bedlam next.

ZT 0200, and 0560 are on my list too.

I find the 4" or so blade size to be most useful to me.

Gee, I would think a 3 foot blade would indeed cover it :P

I usually carry a couple 3.5" blades. Better to have the length and not need it, than need it and not have it, right? I would be willing to bet most of us EDC the maximum permissible by law.

haha, nj states 5" or smaller, hence all my edc blades are 4 inches. any longer and the handle of the knife doesn't exactly fit in my pocket

A four inch bladed folder is pretty much spot on and it seems to be a practical utilitarian size for me. I have some really large folders but truth is they rarely get used. More toys than anything else. I like them though. Four inch fits my hand well and next to disappears clipped in a pocket. I live a quiet life and not stirring up a fuss is fine by me.

I use them for every utility task imaginable. Everything from food preparation to woodworking, cutting up boxes etc etc etc.

my EDC has to at least be a 4" blade, anything lesser than that makes no sense because of no length limit where I live.

All of my EDC's are 3-4 inches, give or take. It seems to be the perfect do-it-all blade size. Large enough to cut bigger, heavier objects and not too scary for the anti-knife crowd.

prefer 3" but have no problem with up to 3.75". More than that and I might as well have a fixed blade.

:D :D Yep and often I do... EDC :) Typically I keep my EDC fixed blades under 4" blade length for convenience and comfort in the overall package. I try to be a "little" discreet... I know people who know me might not agree. :D

Like some of you other guys I have difficulty carrying a smaller knife because of the size of my hands. I do have a spyderco persistence for work (more people friendly) and the only thing saving that is the width of the handle.

Most of my folders fall within 3.5-4" blade length to allow enough handle.

I don't typically limit my edc by size. I run the whole course from a Barlow to the Deimos in size. If I have a knife I like I'll carry it. FL law says "ordinary pocketknife" which can mean just about anything to anyone. The ones I exclude from the ordinary list would be autos, balis and anything specifically designed to cut on people (Karambits and such). But I think it's unlikely anyone would ever argue about a pocketknife when there's a .45 hanging out above it.

My EDC is currently a Case Mini Copperlock, which is a small knife with a 2.5" blade. I like the thin, pocketable size. I chose it because I realized that all I ever do with my knife is cut things like string, apples, price tags, packing tape, cardboard, clamshell packages, etc. Yesterday, I cut up a cured sausage. And because I like the traditional materials and styling. So I needed a blade that fits my own needs. I think that's the best standard: whatever fits your needs and style.

I carry a para 2 so almost 3.5. I am in FL also. By ordinary pocket knife I think they mean to switchblades or anything crazy without ccw. I think you can carry anything and I would I just don't prefer to because of comfort so I just stay under 4"

Lately, between 3.4 to 3.75 inches. That said, I don't mind carrying a smaller blade provided the handle is long enough for me to get a firm and comfortable full-handed grip on it. I'm a small guy so most 3-inch folders will be adequate. It's just that my past few EDC knives have been relatively large, the largest being my Endura 4 at 3.75 inches and the smallest being my Griptilian at 3.45 inches. Cold Steel Code 4 (my current one) is right in the middle at around 3.6 inches overall blade length.

I don’t need anything over three inches for my daily carry, however it is often difficult for me to be satisfied with the handle ergos of small knives. An almost-four-finger-hold-but-not-quite is one of the most irksome things to me. Generally 3.25” knives and greater reliably provide the hold I’m looking for.

What do I typically carry, however? Literally have 2 Recon 1’s in my pocket right now lol

As large as comfortably possible.

For... Reasons.
