What to do when you reach the end of your list?

You can just stop buying more stuff, and enjoy what you have.

Exactly. Personally, I have found that huge collections, unless they are made of truly rare or old items, tend to display the opposite of the prestige they try to convey...: They show a lack of discernment and restraint...

relatively new to the forum, but longtime fan of quality knives. started out several years ago with a spyderco Endura clip-it with ats-55. Now that I'm done with school/training, new job/new income, I've been working on my list.
Not too long ago got a mini-griptilian, kershaw skyline, Ontario rat-2, spyderco sage 1, cold steel American lawman, boker urban trapper.
Recent additions include a pm2 in s30v, zt 0562cf, spyderco military m4, Bradford guardian 3 in m390. One of the knives left for me is a large sebenza. Thought I'd let my wife get me that one for my 40th.

So, to my point, what do you do when you've pretty much checked off most of your list? Hunt for special editions? Wait for new models each year? Sprint runs? Or maybe I should turn my bench grinder into a sharpener/polisher...

Why, it's time for a few nice swords, of course!

Perhaps a titanium longsword? :D

To the op, as suggested earlier, if you have an interest in fixed blades that would open up a whole new list to work your way down. So many different types and designs out there. Otherwise, enjoy your knives until something catches your eye again or you find something through use that could be further refined to better fit your knife "needs". If all else fails you could use your knife money charitably to help those of us in absolutely no danger of getting to the end of our lists... :D

You do and buy whatever makes you happy and that does not come at the cost of a life essential for you or your family. The only person that needs to be happy with your collection or interests are you.

If you got lot, rather than buy anymore, or resist the impulse buy, start from the beginning and just handle them and see why you liked them in the first place, that should satiate the hunger for a little while. Maybe sell or trade off the duplicates ones close to each other in design and function. Or what I need to do , start the rotation and use them, then decide if they are meeting your needs. Finally, like most of us, turn the page over and start a new list on the back side, but be more discerning and specific what you want in blade and handle materials, shape and grind, etc.

Oh yeah, another thought (they come slower and farther between as I get older), see what knives you want to pair in a combo, like a chopper and a small utility, or camp kitchen, or trail or back packing, and how you want to carry them.

I'm in a lull of knife buying right now. I've got a couple of knives incoming from MassDrop but one of those won't be in until November. I plan to buy the new ZT 0460 but I'm in no hurry. I think I want a Spyderco Advocate but that's up in the air until they go back into production again. As others have said, the list never truly ends, I've just gotten really picky and conservative about what's on that list and what makes the cut and pulls $ from my pocket.

Honestly, I've gotten a little sick of the hordes of production knives. I've got bunches of Spydercos, KAIs and Benchmades and none of them really manage to get my heart pumping too much.

I've started down the custom road, not with full on customs but by modifying some of my favorite production knives. Regrinds, annodizing, custom clips and spacers, handle modifications...this is the direction I'm heading in now. I've got a Kizer Mini Intrepid project underway and have a special Delica project I'm about to ship off.

So, I guess my answer is to start pimping out some of your favorite knives. That way you can take a common production run that's one of many and make yours unique and one of a kind. I've had great luck working with some of the talented artists and craft-persons her on BF.

Also, I'm always on the lookout to try a new brand. That's how I found Kizer, Reate and WE. I have a cheap knife incoming from TeKut just for grins and giggles. It's always fun to try a new brand and see their take on knife style and function.

You need to expand your list. Every time I think I have "run out" of things on my list, something new pops up that I know I "need." This forum will do that to you...

Good luck and have fun!

My "list" keeps getting added to so to speak. But, I really don't have a list. 20 years ago, I had a list, but it did not include a single knife. Now I just live and react to things as they come up. It's more fun that way for me.

If you are a folder guy, there is a new world out there with fixed blades. You can always get customs and handmade knives as well.

It is a hobby. There is always something new that catches my attention.

In today's market, there are just way too many pointy things to try out with a list that ends.
Replace some that you have and try new pointy things. It's no fun just collecting knives. The fun comes from the hunt for the next one. Or getting rid of one that you shouldn't have and trying to find another like it.

I have one more knife, then I have my "perfect assortment" of knives. I still have a few orders that will be trickling in over the summer, then I am telling myself I am done buying knives. But I do catch myself trying to make excuses why I need a knife, but I end up holding off buying a day and eventually passing on the purchase. I think at the most, I will buy one a year, we will see. At least that is better than 20 a year.

Customs.

I generally only can afford one or two knives a year, and custom/unique is what I'm into with modern folders.
