Most guys I know open beers with Copenhagen cans, wedding rings, table edges or even their teeth. That being said I think the cap lifter is a practical novelty for those who frequent crowds that drink lots of beer( military/sports teams, home brewers) or just plain enjoy variety in the traditional knives they carry.Probably not the most useful secondary on a knife in comparison to an additional blade but a great combo for fishing, hunting trips, camping, BBQ's or anything social that involves beer drinking.

I would prefer that bottle openers be relegated to camp / scout knives, SAKs and multi-tools. FYI, I never heard the term "cap lifter" until I had seen it in this forum.

This thread has reminded me to put a little flat bottle opener back on my keychain, for those rare occasions when I go out without something in the scout/sak line.

As others have said I like a cap lifter on some knives but others not so much. I think the utility of a short screwdriver/ bottle opener is great but also as others have said maybe we've saw enough of them for a while. Just like spear points I personally probably won't be buying any more for a while. By the way I really like this thread Woodrow.

How about a doctor's knife with just a spatula, sharpened on one side, flat on the tip, and a bottle opener/wire stripper on the dull side? Single blade, five tools, classic design.

I voted for the opener.

I love my Radio Jack, my Scout Knives, my British Army clasp knives, etc ie patterns that have traditionally had a bottle-opener - Let me just add here, that we say 'bottle-opener' not 'cap-lifter' in Britain, and while I've always 'Americanized' my posts , or so I thought, I'm told by some of our US members, that there are parts of the US where the word 'cap-lifter' is unknown, and they say 'bottle-opener'. However, I regard the constant - and it has only been constant over the past couple of years - demand to add cap-lifters to every pattern available with little short of disgust, and to be honest - hope this doesn't sound too insulting - as short-hand for STUPID :grumpy:
nobody around here says cap lifter, only bottle opener. I agree that they arent needed on everything, as there are a lot of ways to open a bottle. An electrician screwdriver is more useful to me, but I appreciate having a bottle opener on my multitool/SAK.

What's a Tank Key? Clearly not start up of military vehicles

Oil Tank? Cess Tank....

Thanks for posting that Jake! I'd been wondering what the little notch in some of my old cap lifter blades was for... now I know it's a tack puller.

A lot of goods used to be packaged in wooden boxes and crate openers and tack pullers were more common every day items. It could still have use today but there is a lot more paper packaging.

All these posts have made me thirsty, so I am going to open a can of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. We have a 5 cent deposit on cans and bottles in Maine, so I always try to buy cans just because it is easier to store them and transport them back to the redemption center.

Although a screwdriver or bottle opener can come in handy on the job, if I am an actual tradesman who uses his knife for work, I am not going to use a $100 GEC. I would probably use an $18 Victorinox or some other equivalent to pry open paint cans, strip wire, etc.

I tend to agree, Jack.

There are some patterns that are associated with a bottle opener (yes, that's what we've always called it in my neck of the woods) and many that are not. For instance, I've never really understood the recent BeerLow fad.

On the other hand, I was delighted to see the Bar-Timber-Scribe-Low make a comeback.

The poll is just so people can vent about it. The discussion is what's really important.

I think when you post a poll, you do need to correctly define the question. It's obvious from many of the posts here that folks didn't really understand what was being asked. I haven't voted, but was going to vote maybe, but in relation to the forum knife, I'd definitely say NO!

The 2011 Knife was something of a learning-curve for GEC with regard to bottle-openers....it doesn't work that well on this knife:o and a certain 'technique' is required to get the tops off.

True. Why on earth they didn't test the design first is a mystery!

I feel like I've been duped!

Good choice

Nobody want a button hook?! :D

Jack, keep in mind that we don't say soda we say pop, but I haven't heard anyone say cap lifter in my travels either.
