What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

I snapped this picture real quick before I leave to go push snow. We have about nine or ten inches right now. Hope everything goes well, but I’ll probably have a sore clutch leg when I get back home. 🤪

Thanks, Jack! Both of your carry choices today measure up to any task!

Your Hartshead Barlow looks “sweet.”
😎👍

Looks like your HHB has a sweet tooth... ;)
Thanks a lot guys! 🤣 😃
Good Morning Porch Friends
Great pic John :)
Thanks Jack and love that Barlow !
Many thanks Steve :)
I'm sure it's colder where the Mammoth ivory on this City Knife was found, but that doesn't make me feel any warmer today!
The fire helps though!

Stay warm Gary :)
First day back, students show up tomorrow. Getting some PDs in today. Have these two with me. 😉👍View attachment 1714009
Good luck Todd, to you and all our other chalkies ;) :)
Some good-looking Micarta there Steve

Have a nice ride, I do not miss pushing snow around.

Paraphrasing Foster Brooks:

People ask what I think of standard transmissions, I dislike them. You’ve got a gas pedal for the right foot, a clutch for the left foot. How do you expect me to work the pedal in the middle?

Also, what do I think of STP? It’s delicious.

Heel of right foot on stop pedal, toes of right foot on the go pedal.
That's how I was taught.🤔 😊
I was also taught to keep foot off the clutch pedal unless starting the engine and taking off from a stop. If you float the gears, there no reason to touch the clutch shifting up or down. When down shifting, you may need to increase engine revs between gears, when the transmission is in neutral.

Sadly, manual transmissions are rare if not unheard of in cars and light trucks today, being an extra cost option these days. Even class 7 and 8 over the road semi trucks, and "off road" dump trucks have a manual transmission as optional equipment. A 10 to 18 speed automatic is much more common on new heavy trucks now.
Makes sense, I suppose. Driving a vehicle other than a motorcycle (I think) with a manual transmission is become a lost life skill. Inside a couple generations ,I doubt anyone will know how to drive a stick shift. 😱🤨🙄☹️

I remember when even a full size 4 door family sedan or station wagon had a 3 on the tree manual transmission as standard equipment. The automatic was the extra cost option. Mercedes-Benz had a 4 on the tree. I never got to work on a 60's Rolls Royce or Bentley. They might have had a floor shifter for the manual transmissions, which if you do it right, shift smoother than any automatic.

Edit:
I agree with your assessment of STP. It and oil, wheel bearing grease, etc. just add a little flavor to your sandwich and french fries. Better than ketchup, IMHO.

Remember 2021? The posts quoted below are SO last year.

Looking forward to a patina pick on that Joker.

A gift from Todd @bigfish64 was in my mailbox today. What a pleasant surprise 🤩

A Case Synthetic Ebony, CV, Tribal Lock 😍
...
Congrats on the elegant Tribal Lock, Mike, and props to Todd for his generosity!!

Possum and a Utica Cattle knife
...
And just in today a birth year Camillus demo knife
...
Terrific trio, Steve! Congrats on the birth year knife; if I ever get a birth year knife, it will probably be dated with Roman numerals!

Sweet canoe (and footwear), Jim!

I'm carrying a couple of KOTYs:

Remarkable pair, Harry!

Eureka again today.
...
Looks like, knife wise, you truly "have found it"!

...
Hope everyone is doing OK :) I'm carrying my Rosewood Lambsfoot Big 'Un, and a Random Tuesday Boker Atlas
...
Notable pair, Jack! When I first saw your Boker Atlas, I thought that I should get some kind of knife with copper or brass handle. The Atlas model with those metals seems to go out of stock quickly here, compared to the stainless steel handle Atlas (with black or silver covers). I've also been looking at Mercators with copper or brass handles; not sure which I prefer yet.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the sowbelly. I’m indeed from the Netherlands! And yes i had some banket haha. I love that you have some dutch in you aswell! Have you ever visited the Netherlands?
...
Kevin, I've never visited the Netherlands, although my wife and daughter have. My paternal grandfather probably would have made a point of telling you that he was not Dutch, but Frisian.

...
Thanks Jeremy, I told my wife that we needed to find a place with a deck railing and some woods for my knife pictures. The hot tub, fire place, and enough bedrooms for everyone were minor concerns.
🤣🤣🤣
Priorities!

This could be habit forming.....

Striking couple of Cadets!

Lookout Jack and a Coolidge Jack. I’ll likely carry these into wooden Wednesday.
...
Sounds like an excellent plan; superb wood!

... So I thought I’d better put away some tools and get my snow shovel out of the shed.
Doubt we’ll get enough to need the blower.
Famous last words?View attachment 1710510Now we have a couple of inches. ...
Up until Saturday night, I think we'd had almost 20" of snow for the season, but I only had to shovel a couple of times. We'd get a couple of inches and it would disappear in a couple of days. That's MY kind of winter!

I've been enjoying all your shots of knives among the Christmas decorations, Joshua! Impressive staggy Owl!

...
Just my AC today

Striking knife, Jack!

Toting a couple flashy BB Winchesters today. :)
Celebrating the New Year in style, JJ!!

Happy New Year everyone. Spent the afternoon taking down Christmas decorations with this sowbelly in my pocket. Recycled pic.

Magnificent sowbelly stockman, Jeremy!

Tasty pairs, Jack, both knives and bagels!

Thanks for the superb sunrise shots with Merle! Did he object to getting up at that hour?
I was mesmerized by the reflections in your photos, especially that little hexagon/honeycomb wearing a halo in the middle pic. Can't figure out what caused it!

Happy Sunday Everybody
First Knife on a Post pic of 2022??

No it isn’t Gary, and the Micarta versions aren’t for everyone, but if you like Micarta and a very light knife, they are spot on.
:thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:

I spent most of yesterday out in the garage while it snowed. No sense in pushing it around until it’s done. Unless it’s Snowmageddon like some of you (@Modoc ED) are having. Then, you have to get on it and just try to keep up.

So I did some massive cleaning and organizing of my little woodshop, which is what I call it when my wife’s car is not in there. I also drilled the tiny holes for the side position markers on the home made guitar neck I’m making for my son. Next up is making a nut from some cow bone and putting in the frets.View attachment 1713384Older Case TL-29 with a Scrimshaw Serpentine Jack. I had to replace this one’s blade.View attachment 1713385
Cool pair of knives, Jeff!

Thanks for the lyrics to match your knife pics! That NKCA gunboat is cool; you're building up an impressive canoe armada!

I'm gonna give this Remington R4468 Lumberjack a go today. Lumberjack is Remington's name for this R4468 but Moose would be more like it. Anyway it should come in handy for whatever chore raises it's ugly head today. I should shovel some snow but I'm just too tuckered out to do it.
...
Nice moose, ED! Take it easy with the snow shoveling - don't overdo it!

A couple of Cammie's , 50 and a 68

Virile pair of vintage knives, Steve!

🤣... Too Funny... 🤣

I did use my Roy Rogers coffee mug. 🤠
There you go! That's starting 2022 off with a bang!

Hi Gary, I took inspiration from how you schedule your carries, including having occasional free choice slots, for something new or that I may want to carry. I assigned two knives a day, and usually specific knives, but sometimes a type (such as “canoe” or “GEC 15”) which would allow me options on some days.

This is day 3. Day 1: stuck to the schedule. Day 2: only carried one of the two knives assigned. Day 3 (today): changed the schedule to carry the 68 another day. My prediction is that I’ll be pretty true, but sometimes only carry one of the two knives assigned because it‘s what I’m used to and all I need. It’s only three months (except for a trip in February where I’ll possibly take a Cadet and/or Peanut) so not a big ask. I enjoy variety, so it would be harder on me to carry one knife exclusively for that long.
Sounds like you thought about what kind of schedule YOU can live with, and that's what's important to make a schedule work, I'll bet.
I have one more week on my existing rotation schedule, and then I think I'm going to switch to something else for at least a couple of months. A leading candidate is to mostly carry knives I've acquired during the pandemic so that those relatively recent acquisitions can have a longer "get acquainted" period than most of them have had so far.

Couple of knives that'll give you an honest day's work, Taylor!

Thanks Gary and all the Best for 2022 !
Same to you, Steve; thanks!

I am one of the few people who knows that there is more than only One Fruit Cake that gets passed from one person to the other . We have been buying them from Collin Street Bakery for years . Never had a bad one yet .

Harry
😁 😁

...
It surprised me when he grabbed ahold of it. Luckily there were no cracks or holes in the immediate area for him to hide in with the knife.

This knife roll was as gift from from my daughter as was the sod buster.

Awesome Christmas present from your daughter, Dave!

I used to spend a lot of time using Photoshop, but I remember when text and photos used to have to be cut out and pasted for publication, and where pics often had to be trimmed by hand. I once rang my editor, and he said, "Hi Jack, I've just spent 10 minutes cutting round your head!" :D
I wonder how many of my students have any idea of the etymology of "cut" and "paste" in their computer menus?

Hope everyone is easing into the New Year :) Got my regular Hartshead Barlow with me, and a Joseph Westby Ruler Knife
Two winners, Jack!

I Like that Carhartt stockman! That youngster is literally "making tracks"!

It's 2022 - Don't worry, Be Happy - You have a knife in your pocket :)
