Nice knives and a Great Newspaper
Thanks! I love making the pieces and I'm very excited to see how they all turn out. I'll probably post a picture of the finished set when all is said and done. That's going to be a nice set![]()

As soon as I wanted to start whittling making a chess set was first thing on my mind to carve. Its a good challenge that I hope will help me hone my new skills. Plus its a super relaxing hobby. To answer your questions, I have a chess set at home that I'm roughly basing my designs off of. I'm also using some pictures I found online to give me more inspiration. I'm not too far into the project yet, I've only made a handful of pawns, but I already have an idea of what I want the more intricate pieces to look like. The knight is the only piece that feels daunting but I'm sure I'll reach a point that I'm happy with even if it takes a few tries. And I only have a bunch of basswood to carve so everything will be made of the same kind of wood. I think I'll probably just use a darker stain for the black pieces and some mineral oil for the white, nothing too complicated. As a total novice, I'm getting a ton of enjoyment out of this project so I highly recommend giving it a shot yourself. That's a cool project that has never gotten beyond the wish stage for me (except I bought a big jar full of old wooden jenga-like blocks - about 1"x1"x3" - at a junk store)!Do you have some kind of formal pattern for the chess pieces, or are you creating them "from your mind's eye"? Do you have 2 different kinds of wood for the black pieces and the white pieces, or will you get 2 colors via staining/painting?
Thank you, Tyler.Man that's a beautiful knife!!

Very nice piece of art disguised as a knife.
It is, and has a nice patina started too.I bet that's an apple slicing son-of-a-gun.![]()
Awesome looking tomatoes. You can have the bacon and lettuce. I take the tomatoes, Dukes mayonnaise on some Hillbilly brand bread with a couple good hot banana peppers and will be eating like royalty. Redneck royalty, but royalty none the less
Looks familiar… I carry mine way more than I thought I would.Case pen knife. Another excellent carry for shorts. Actually, a fairly excellent carry for anything
