I think that in the first half of the 20th century, that was the common term for an open ended wrench, here, as well. It could be that WC's father was born in Sheffield!

It doesn't get much simpler than this, unless you're prepared to choose between the straight and the curved.

There's still the long and the short, though, and a lot to be said for the stockman pattern.
It wasn't so simple to snake High Spade out of my secret knife drawer. It's gotten crowded in there.
