The barlow is made from a blade and spring from an 1960s school knife
It was satisfying to save an old workhorse 😊
You should absolutely give modding/building a go, very nice to have the knife you want as you want it 👍🏿
Very nice work. What is the secret to getting spring to align properly when done? What is the secret to getting spring pins back in?
Thanks
Same spot as yesterday’s photo, but slightly different weather.View attachment 2155442
Totin a $6 fleamarket score, a 73+ year old Camillus #68 Stockman. It was in a box of mostly junky broken old Boy Scout Imperials and Colonials. Encrusted with old grease and grime, with the bone faded to a weird beige.
My oldest Opinel, bought out of an outdoor supply catalog in the ‘70s. Years later, I dropped it on concrete, and busted the tip off. So it sat in a toolbox, until I came across it much later, and re-ground the blade. Then re-shaped the beechwood.View attachment 2155443
I see you have some frozen rain. It is falling here but so far not sticking. Hope it stays warm enough so it doesn't stick.

I am not sure how/what you mean by aligning the spring? If you mean how flush it is when the blade is open vs closed, it´s to have the same distance around the joint hole of the blade. Regarding spring pins, I always make new ones

Great refurbished Jeff. Nice pair.
Well, thanks, Bob🙂
Your Scrimshaw Schrade barlow just might be my favorite out of your fine collection. But the blue and orange Victorinox is a close contender.👌
Gotta love April. 82F yesterday, 41F this morning. Have a good Monday folks!

Which is why my wise Grandmother had a rule about waiting til after May 1st to put your garden in. In the 80s last week, 29 this morning. And snow.
Double stag and Cocobolo customs for this breezy Monday. 😊

I was about at the limit of my talent inlaying plain round fret markers on a guitar fingerboard. I cannot imagine trying an inlay of a buck’s head! 🤙

Close pto an inch on the ground at dawn, but it’s melting fast.

I’ve tried mating a Schrade blade with Camillus spring, but no go.

I think he meant how do you tension the spring so it lines up with the blade pin hole when setting the new pins.
Lacking proper cutlery tools like a stiddy, I put a piece of flat steel in the well against the spring, and use a small C clamp to push the spring back enough to drive the pin. Awkward, but it usually works.

Smart woman, Jeff. We always wait until Mother's Day in Central NY.
