What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Jack, I've thought of many random things on my walks around town, but I've never thought about a sjambok, since I'd never heard of it until you mentioned it! o_OšŸ¤“ I looked it up, and it seems to be rather like a riding crop on steroids! I also learned (via Wikipedia - consider the source) that the police in Sheffield were once investigated for purportedly using them on "detainees". The device seems to have Dutch origins (via South Africa), as do I (not via South Africa).
Interesting that 'The Rhino Whip Affair' is mentioned there Gary. I researched it over 25 years ago, for an article, so know quite a bit about it. It was the first big case of police corruption outside London, and threw a spotlight on the routine brutality of Sheffield police, eventually leading to the resignation of the Chief Constable. The case started, when two men were arrested, and questioned in relation to a burglary at a local cafe, during which they were badly beaten with a police truncheon and a sjambok. Despite leaving the men, still pleading their innocence, covered in cuts and bruises, they were charged, and taken to court, where one of them ripped off his shirt. The police first claimed that the men had beaten each other up, then that they were Sado-masochists, then that they had been injured while attacking the police. Two young coppers eventually agreed to act as sacrificial lambs, on the basis that they kept their jobs. When they, in fact, lost their jobs, they named others, and told of the routine practice of torturing suspects, which eventually led to an inquiry, exposing longstanding police corruption in Sheffield.

As for dogs, I'm lucky to have never had any great trouble with them, but a friend of Tool Man's recently lost something very precious to a Rottweiler! While my elderly neighbour was nearly killed by an Akita, a few years back

Thank you Jack! 🤠

Sweet pair knives!🤠
Many thanks David :)

Good to see Mr.Albers out today Jack.🫔 Your other knife is very interesting and developing a nice patina.

We love traditional stuff around here.

So I decided to make my tea properly this morning,my tea pots are new and plain.

But most of my cups and saucers are old,tea just tastes better for a bit of effort brewing loose leaf tea.

My 15 is out the draw and out the tube, as you can see I didnt do a very good job removing the chain/bail and filling in the hole.

I also found a slip I bought from a Ukrainian maker before the war started, she is still going strong on Etsy.

Thank you very much y friend, it's a Boker Atlas šŸ™‚ Came with a pocket-clip, but very easily removed šŸ˜‰šŸ‘
Well, a hot and quiet weekend has come to an end. Hope everyone has a good start to the week. Looks like I need to ride a few miles on my bike, my belt must be shrinking.View attachment 2262289
I know that feeling Bob! 😱😁 Great-looking pair there šŸ™‚šŸ‘

Thanks Amir! The jigging on the pile side is better than on the mark side. As for the colour, it started out as chestnut bone but I later soaked it in a mixture of rosehip and black tea. Looked ugly at first but with some oil and polishing it turned out quite nice.
Very resourceful use of natural methods.šŸ¤™
I have considered using some of my extremely plentiful black walnut nut husks to dye bone brown.

Sweet. Another new prize SCC?šŸ‘Œ
This old Colonial Knife Co "cigar end" pocket knife belonged to my Father who passed away in 1985 when I was 26. I found this knife in an old cigar box a while back and it was in poor shape. The blades were rusted badly and stuck inside the liners. I spent several hours carefully performing rust removal and cleaning/oiling the knife all by hand. Now the walk and talk is very solid and the old girl is ready to to carried again.

This post made my day. Yesterday after church, I pulled a bunch of stuff from the garden, and we drove down to Mom and Dad’s to share a dinner with my sister and her husband, and a nephew and his girlfriend. Brother in law grilled chicken while I made a huge salad. Mom, who’s having trouble getting around-she’s 85- didn’t have to lift a finger. And Dad, who is 89, kept thanking us for sparing her the kitchen work.
Restoring your Dad’s old Colonial was a labor of love. I hope it brings many happy memories of your Father, who passed too young.šŸ™Œ

That’s a proper knife and garden photo.šŸ¤™
Thanks Jeff,
Pumas are real good built like tanks. We probably don't see a lot as the vintage 1s are very collectable & pricey.

Thanks mate
The toothpick was made for my 50th. Scales are butterscotch micarta.

Sounds like you @ephsea @Chief have had some close run in with dogs. Stay wary & safe. Doesn't always turn out good, I've been injured more than once walking my dog, ended up with 19 stitches in 1 leg.
I’ve told this before…
When I was a teenager, I subscribed to Outdoor Life, and always sent off for the free catalogs from outdoors and sporting goods suppliers. And I saved up enough to send off for a Puma hunting knife. I think it was the Hunter’s Pal.
Then some years later, deer hunting way back in the Missouri Ozark woods behind my Step Grandpa’s place, I reached down and felt an empty sheath.🫤
Looked and looked, backtracked…but never found it. So I hung the sheath on a tree in case whoever found it could have the sheath. Dammit.
Now I can’t afford a vintage replacement.

Jeff, thank you. Even though I just finished supper after seeing the tomato picture I am craving fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, garden fresh butter beans garden fresh cream corn, garden fresh chilled cukes with salt and fresh cracked black pepper, a couple hot banana peppers, big glass of iced tea and hot cornbread from the cast iron skillet.
For the record, I grew up in the deep south so it was iced tea and corn bread with every meal but breakfast and breakfast was biscuits.
Oh man, sounds good!
The only problem is that I just realized that I am going to have to get everything out and get busy canning beets and turnip greens. I’d better do that before the beans and tomatoes are ready. A LOT of work.
Thanks for all the advice Jeff, I shall attempt to grow food and TL-29's ;)

Glad to hear you've escaped injury so far Gary. "Puffing up" and yelling at the top of my lungs (I'm pretty loud) has saved me more than once, but it's nice to have a back up plan.

Ack this is a huge fear, that or worse yet my kid or dog gets hurt/traumatized. The dog does a great job of protecting us from people, but when it comes to other dogs he actually does not understand aggression and will stand there and get torn up (twice now 😄, but luckily not too bad). I am seriously deliberating the sjambok, and/or a well-turned Cypress stave with an airhorn attached.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!
ā€œGrow food and tote TL-29sā€ Yes!šŸ˜Ž

Carried the Yeti GoBox 15 on the boat today. It’s a great waterproof and rugged storage solution. Still toting the TSC Case and Grohmann, but added an LT Wright fixed blade. View attachment 2262079
Nuce Grohmann! What do they call that model? Do you like it?
Well worth the wait.
My Bee Balm Monarda and Purple Cone Flowers are in full glory right now, attracting all kinds of pollinators. I take their seeds and spread them around every year.

Always liked the honest, straightforward look of the 15 Jack. I sort of copied that by modding a few TL-29s into single blade jacks.
