What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

That harness jack must have been made by NYKC, with that Harrison punch.

India Steel Works John Primble and I agree with you on the actual maker.😊

What lake are you fishing on? FUN.

When we lived on Lake of the Ozarks in the ‘80s, the Dept of Conservation had been stocking stripers in the lake for a few years, but that was not public knowledge. But people figured it out when fishermen started coming into town with splintered fishing rods and wild eyed stories of SOMETHING HUGE OUT THERE.

Up the Big Niangua arm, there’s a large spring ~ HaHaTonka Spring. Now a State Park. Where the spring lake/sinkhole, 80 feet deep, ( it was actually the roof of a giant underground cave that collapsed ~”A Karst Topography Showcase”~ creating a 48 million gal/day spring out of an underground river) into the main lake is a striper haven. Pretty soon, Jack’s started carrying saltwater rigs, and hanging mounts that looked as big as your leg on the wall.

I caught that 14 pound 5 ounce Hybrid Striper in Cane Run Creek on Herrington Lake. About 60 feet deep where I caught him. I threw a 3/4 ounce Rooster tail just past where he had jumped (behind me) ...............................I felt a little tick and saw my line go limp at about 25 feet deep, as the bait was sinking. Knowing the depth of the bottom helped.

I reeled up the slack and set the hook and the fight was on. It took a while to wear him down. 😊

Been a minute again, life has intruded lately. On the bright side, I come bearing new (to me) knives!

Predictable July 4th carry

A perfect pair. Thanks to Buckeye Sharp Buckeye Sharp for a very smooth trade for the Grinling. The hunt was worth, it *is* love! 🥰

A really lovely surprise from Will Power Will Power showed up - my first (certainly not my last) Winchester, a swell-center splitback that is perhaps the most perfect watch-pocket knife ever? Cam tangs all around, nicely jigged bone, carbon steel blades just the right thickness, hits the nail on the head 🤗 I actually prefer this to the GEC 33 version, which I had tried some time back and crossed off my list due to my extreme finickiness about clip blades. Okay, maybe it's a prejudice. I'm working on it, you all help 😉.
Also thoughtfully included was a fun post-card with Bears, and a coin (I *do* collect foriegn coins!). Apparently that superstition about knife-giving and friendship exists across the Atlantic as well, but I was unaware of the talisman effect of adding a coin. Anyways, a great excuse to throw something in future porch-bound packages so I shall endeavor to follow Will's good example. Thank you again Will, very thoughtful and useful, just like your posts here 😉

The members of the porch prove time and again, what a great place it is. There is friendship, knowledge and generosity.
I need to thank JonMcD and Chris@321Bandaid for a collaborative gift. They did not just stick a knife in a box and post it. They coordinated having a knife, discussing a design, sending it to Glennbad, then gifting it.
This rambling cannot express my gratitude gentlemen.
Just now getting to this, and all I have to say is WOW! The only thing better than the knives around here are the people 😁 You all really are a (mostly) good influence on me.

11 years already since I got this.... Can't believe how much this maker has grown in popularity and reputation. All well deserved but if I'd only known. That said, I probably wouldn't have hoarded GEC because it's always been a luxury to buy more knives. For me it borders on an addiction. It comes and goes.....IMG_6068.jpegIMG_6067.jpeg

Don't forget the blown and spooled reels that had lost 100% of the line to go with the splintered rods.

Very few freshwater reels can survive Stripers.
Offhand the various Garcia Ambassedur's and the Mitchell 300 spinning reels* are the only ones I can think of off hand.

A shore fisher on the Atlantic side of Florida was after Reds and Bonefish, in July or August of 2007.
He made the news. He hooked and landed a 5.5 foot nurse shark with his Mitchell 300. 🤯
Only reel damage was a bent handle, which is(?) (was) easy to source and change when he landed that fish.

Personally, I'd pick the 302 "Saltwater" for Stripers, Blues, Cod, and larger. 😇👍

Hope y’all enjoy the day!

Sweet pair Jon !

Oregon Trapper, and Kaufmann & Sons garden knife. Trying to grow watercress on the deck. Been intrigued by that plant since I was a kid. Grandpa and his brothers used to pick that along with miner’s lettuce, and other wild greens for their Mom.
He showed me an old homestead site up on the hill above his lake house where the only thing remaining was a tiny walled in spring that had been their water source. It’s full of watercress.

Wow that's nice,I never knew how close they were to the moose pattern going to keep my eyes peeled.

A couple of estate sale finds ($10 total) are in the pocket while I work on cleaning them up. The Western 854 Hawkbill Pruner is in really nice shape with a nice, heavy patina on the blade. It needs some gentle cleaning and oiling. I really like these old Westerns. The Imperial Barlow is a different story. The blades are a disaster and the Delrin has some missing pieces. It may be a wintertime restoration project (or it may just sit in a box with dozens of others!😜🤪).
