Can’t stop carrying this beauty from Grayson Jennings, though I did have the 53 in my pocket for Stockman Sunday. Got a new standing desk for my office at home. Was a pain to get it built and everything set up, but it’s really nice to have on days when I’m working from home, and I needed a reason to clean off my desk and organize my stuff anyway.

Charr Charr Thats just not right right there. How do you get anything done? Where's your support? Cup holder??? How ya gonna get coffee stains scattered about to mark your spot? I gotta say you've got an impressive setup but just to show ya what a true Command Center looks like this is mine.

Yours is more organized than mine. I keep meaning to do something about that, but there are always so many other things calling for attention.

A few months ago, one of the members (Might have been S Sid Post ) was asking about a large stockman to be used as a work knife on the farm. That got me wondering about how the latest versions of Schrade Uncle Henry knives were looking, now that they've been made offshore for about 20 years. Schrade appears to still be part of Taylor Brands, but Taylor is now owned by Smith and Wesson. The first Asian Schrade knives out the pipe in ~2005 were pretty poor. By ~2012 they were putting out a reasonable product, but not one that a collector would salivate over. Now they have a "Next Gen" version. So I bought a couple to try.

I would say they are still not collector knives, but they are nicer than the knife I bought in 2012 and do a good job as a work knife. Springs are flat in open and closed positions. Blades are well shaped. Springs are about a 5. One minor gap betweent the springs, no gaps anywhere else. Blades feel crisp on the stones. US Schrade used to run their 440A stainless at 58HRC. These feel similar. And the 7Cr17MoV is a very close approximation to 440A. Reasonably tough, holds an edge OK, easy to sharpen. And if you do something that needs to be done, but which wrecks the knife, they are inexpensive to replace.

I said all that to say that today I have an Taylor Next Gen Schrade 885UH Senior Rancher in my pocket today as I work in the garden pulling weeds.

Ancient (possibly pre-Neanderthal) adage handed down over the eons:
"A clean desk is a sure sign of a sick mind."

I know Taylor sold out to BTI in 2014 or 2015.
Did BTI get bought out by Smith & Wesson?

The post 2013 "regular" Uncle Henry (LB7, and 885UH) and post 2018 Old Timer's (7OT, 858OT, and 858OTB) I own have at least the same over-all quality, fit and finish as my pre-2004 Schrade/Old Timer (7OT with 1095 and Schrade+ blades, 6OT, 8OT, 858) and Imperial Frontier Double Eagle. I also have a c1975-1976 Imperial shell construction stockman. blades are tight, but mark side shell is a bit loose on one end. Lower over-all quality than the contemporary higher priced brands, of course.
The offshore 7OT is considerably thinner mark to pile sides than the on-shore 6/7OT's I have.
As for the 8OT/UH885, and 858OT/OTB, in my opinion, the offshore Taylor/BTI knives have received a major upgrade compared to the onshore produced models:
The onshore 8OT/UH885, and 858 all have Swindon Key construction.
The offshore knives have the superior pin construction.

If key construction was superior, other makers would have started using it as soon as the patents expired, long before Imperial-Schrade went under.

As far as I know, only Schrade USA ever used key construction.
("Schrade", "Uncle Henry" and some (but not all) "Old Timer" slip joints.)

I believe the Old Timer Barlow and Scout knifes had pinned construction.
I am not sure about the Schrade IXL, and NYKC/ Hammer Brand commemorative/anniversary/reproduction of the 1911 Official BSA knife. (the first "official" BSA knife. The BSA was founded in 1910.) Tho I believe they are pinned.
