What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

IMG_4134_zpstlrrrk45.jpg

I used the super sharp punch to remove part of a thorn that had broken off deep in my wife's finger. It had been there for the past week so a small bubble of fluid had formed around it. The punch tip is so thin that I was able to get really deep without cutting her.

The wind was whipping this 15° morning but the sunrise was incredible! Every time I pop this Blackwood Barlow in my pocket in reminded of how cool a wood Blackwood is. Probably my favorite wood. I still remember seeing my first Ebony and Blackwood knives in person and realizing how rich and densely colored wood could be.

No White Christmas here...snow is rapidly melting... just eternal darkness:(

Got this one out today to cheer things up!:D

IMG_4277.jpg

That ought to bring a warm glow to your heart! I'm sure it will:D

Slipped this Dutch Army Knife in my pocket today

Cool carry and pic, Jack! I guess its an early Alox

Thanks for link. Browsing all of the different shields was very enjoyable.

My pleasure! I enjoyed looking it through again. Maybe someone would like add some more. I know there are more threads on the subject but the search did not go well as I had anticipated.

Wow That is such a nice knife. I really would like to start doing some old knives but not sure most of you are picking them up. I look on ebay and its all these old knives with "MINT" blades where they polish all the good stuff to smithereens. I can't understand why they do that.

Gevo The bone is spectacular on that old knife!!:cool:
Hey, I have to ask, why the main blade appears to not fully close? Is it a Catt?
Oh, and do you have a picture of the pile side?

Yes sir :D it's a Catt and the main needs sharpening - its pretty dinged up and unevenly mauled:eek::D The kick extends quite a bit so it can be reduced should I decide to do it. I will contemplate the knife before and if I decide to do anything more than sharpen and clean it. I just gave the slabs an oil rub down.

I will need to get pic of the pile side for you :D

Josh
Thanks and your right - many are ruined by buffing them to "mint":( That is why I looked for another in this pattern ...I have one that was ruined:mad:

With extra work, and most of my annual social calendar crammed into about 3 weeks in December, I'm struggling to keep up at the moment, particularly as my internet connection has been terrible, but hoping to be able to spend an hour or two here today ...

Fun holiday pic of a working knife! I hope you enjoy (survive?) your busy holiday season, Jack!:D

Thanks 5K Qs
Really liking those two Cases you posted makes me want to get another new knife .
...
Thanks, TheFactor. :) Do you think I could keep a resolution to only buy a knife in 2017 if I really NEED it??

Thanks GT. The steel balls can be purchased online. We shoot mostly lead though. It actually has a greater impact force than steel. I have a lead mold that I used to use for fishing weights and jigs that I modified slightly. You can get buckets of old lead wheel weights at the local junk yard. I poured so many a couple years ago, we're still working off the same bucket. Target practice is all captured and reused.

Today it's the Wharncliffe Whittler.

pwocWxR.jpg
Thanks for the ammo info, Bob. I remember as kids, my brothers and i would repurpose the lead "head covers" of nails designed for making corrugated steel buildings. I like your distinctive whittler; pre-Seahorse??

...
I like the wood on that Joker. I wasn't aware they made knives with carbon steel blades...
...
The Joker is olive wood and I'm sure a hollow-grind; a razor sharp little knife which I should use more often.
donn, I have a Joker almost identical to yours that's perhaps my favorite souvenir of a visit to my daughter in Spain 2 years ago. Here's a pic of mine (with monogrammed patina ):

My goodness, Sam, that's a ravishing knife!:thumbup:

Thanks, Gary! Ahh, the beautiful Sodbuster Jr! "Happier times" indeed and warmer, too!!
...
Red Soup today.

Thanks, Dean; the warmth of last August certainly contributed to my seeing that as happier times! Your red soup can certainly help keep away the cold!

Since I live just east of you GT you'll understand my sentiments toward your first photo. It's only mid-December and I'm already longing for those "happier times". Looks like your whittling is improving Gary, did you do those with the peanut?

This has been in my pocket all day today and it's been making me wonder, "What more do I need?" It is a duplicate of the first knife I ever purchased. I visited the Sabre display at the local department store each time I was there. So when I got a paper route this was one of the very first things I bought. Wish I had the original but I do still enjoy this exact copy of the one I purchased, with my own money 55 years ago.
Thanks for the kind words, James. The peanut did some of the whittling, but I tend to use whatever knife I have handy to do a little whittling when I get a chance, so many of my "practice pieces" are produced by several knives.
I appreciate your nostalgic story about your Sabre Barlow. I've been using my first knife, a Colonial Forest-Master scout pattern, more and more over the past several months.

Thanks, Bob! I have a lot of fun with my granddaughters - ...
But they are into superheroes and Star Wars! :) Third generation as I started my son on the movies while he was very young. :D
Dean, if you see the recently-released Star Wars flick, I'd appreciate a review! ;)

Your very personalized Opinel is very cool, ThePeacent!

As so often happens, my newest knife has gone to the head of the line for daily carry.

An A G Russel "War Eagle" 3 3/4" Copperhead in Chinese 440A and jigged bone.

Congrats on your new W.E. copperhead, Frank; it looks grand! I look forward to reading one of your succinct and informative reviews after you've had a chance to put it through its paces. I've been looking at the War Eagle canoes for ages, but haven't yet taken the plunge.

On a rare Sunday at work I was Totin this GEM.

That Orchard Gem is exceptional, Ron!

Gary

Thank you so much for your thoughts! The steel you get online as Bob stated. The ones in my pic are pinchinco balls and I don't shot those - except in my pinchinco machine:D

Your sod buster is a looker and on a nice vacation i see...the south of France...
Thanks for the wrist rocket ammo info, Gev. I WISH that SBJr and I were in the south of France (or, better yet, Spain) right now! :p 30-40 mph winds today, but at least the high temp is supposed to double to 30 degrees, so I expect to live to shiver another day!

Thanks GT, you highlighted some great knives, including your own :)
...
Carrying these two today, by George Wostenholm and Joseph Rodgers. ...

Thanks, Jack. Utterly utilitarian, yet thoroughly enchanting, pair you've posted!

Thanks, Jack. I love that Rodgers, though it needs more stamping on the blade. They missed a spot. :D
:D:D

I won't bore y'all with another pick of a Buck 303 ( today at least) ...
I don't think your daily 303s are boring, Clay; I admire your dedication and commitment!

Was pretty sure I'd lost the 303 I've been carrying lately working at keeping roads and sidewalks open during our first winter storm this past weekend. It was being used to open salt bags and I figured it fell out of the back of the truck...

Just went out to start my truck and looked in the back and saw what yesterday's sunshine uncovered!
So I'm carrying this.

Those GEC EO 85s are certainly remarkable knives!!

These two today.

Rick, that's a captivating pair!

I like Ike (and peanuts)!! ;) Beauties, Pete!

On cardboard box breakdown duty today.

And in the LRP, the Gem of 2016.

That's a Tasteful (box)Cutter, Dean! ;) And congrats on that new Thriller Charlow!

Hang in there, Will; in another week, things will start to (imperceptibly) brighten, right? ;) That knife of yours certainly cheered me up!

Slipped this Dutch Army Knife in my pocket today

Alluring Alox, Jack, and especially appealing photo! My paternal grandparents emigrated (separately, as children) to the US from near Leeuwarden around 1900.

That's an eye-catching knife, bonzodog! Who makes it? What's the pattern, and what type of wood forms the covers?

That old Catt has some of the nicest bone covers I've ever seen, Gev. I can see why you picked that one up.

Will, haven't seen Kerry around in awhile. Thanks for posting that very, very nice Jack. I love the swedge and the long pull on that one.

Nice old Army knife, Jack!

Fine looking knife, bonzodog. I'm curious who made that one too. Oops, Tim Britton. He does such nice work.

Frank, I've had my eye on A.G.'s War Eagles. I'm happy to hear your good report. They look great and I wouldn't expect anything less from A.G.

Woke up to 6 degrees F today. "Baby It's Cold Outside!"
Came in from my morning walk and warmed up by the fire. Halfrich Small Rounder with me today.

Good to see Jack. I've been a little MIA lately. Hope you have a good holiday season.

Thanks Alan, I'm surviving so far! :D

Cool carry and pic, Jack! I guess its an early Alox

Thanks Gev :) Victorinox took over the Dutch Army Knife contract subsequently, but this one is made by the Dutch cutler Amefa. It's well-made, and the blade steel takes a good edge

Thanks for the kind words my friend, that's a fascinating coincidence :) The map is from this page of the London Evening Standard of May 10th 1940.

Holding up Micarta Money with flair:D

I love that one Ron, I look forward to its transformation in years to come:thumbup:

Ron, you rocked Micarta Monday with that one! Beautiful! Gotta be the best cover choice of the recent release.

Thanks a lot gentlemen. :)

I forgot about that one, Ron. Love the shield and that's my favorite pair of blades. Nice!

Thanks Gary. :) It is a pocketful and I admit that I don't carry it that often. That being said, it is a terrific knife and as you noted a very nice choice of blades.

Gary (GT)
Thank you for the fine complement...fine Sir:D

WOWSERS!!! That is a fantastic Jack. The jigging is out of this world cool.
