Hi Kris, I don't know if there's a name for that Damascus style, but I nominate kaleidoscope. It must be very difficult to accomplish.
1940s Graef & Schmidt smooth bone Jack. This was a rescue knife. It was used to open paint cans and mix the paint, it was sealed shut with dried paint. When I finally got it open the primary blade had a couple of dime size scallops chipped from the edge where he opened the lid on the paint can. Finally after all that abuse he put it away wet with paint and in the box it went for 50 years. When I finally got it open I reworked the blade and began cleaning the paint off the scales. It took a couple of days to save it but it was worth it. The blades still walk and talk and the bone is just beautiful with all its patina and warmth. Glad I saved it instead of tossing it, I saw something in it worth savin'.

Alan, it is a mosaic, course(low layer) W pattern. The pattern is created in the center of the billet and then brought to the surface through a very clever trick. The W pattern has many variations and a modified W pattern is very popular with damascus forgers.
toting this today![]()
