What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

I don´t think, this will be a good idea. The bigger the contact area between spring and tang, the better ist the stability. And if you file of the towered tip of the tang, it might be weaken and the power working against the blade while cutting might force the blade to bend upwards.

Not so sure about this because some knives have lowered spines (it’s the spine he’s talking about, not the tang since that sits inside the knife at the joint). GEC has made them, the 78 is an example. As long as the spring is able to sit flush into the angle of the tang and blade, it will lock up just fine. Look at the amount of material on the Joker’s blade/tang area. Rounding the spine’s sharp corner won’t affect action or create any blade play. It just won’t match up perfectly with the top of the spring is all.

One custom maker that does this purely by design is Ryuichi Kawamura. It creates a nearly sunk joint on all of his slipjoints for this reason.

Here’s the 78:

Ok, then I misunderstood the plan. Lowering the spine might work, I´ve also a few of Solingen blades, that look like your 78 and they are solid.
But rounding the spine´s sharp corner could cause some instability IMHO, if you file away too much. So it´s neccessary to do it in very carefull steps. I wouldn´t round it.

I don’t think you misunderstood, the point is, if you slightly round off that sharp corner, there’s plenty of tang below that spine’s corner to keep everything squared up and tight. I doubt just burnishing off the sharp edge will change any geometry at all.

Then again, I’m not a knifemaker so maybe someone will chime in and prove me wrong.

today and maybe for the next days: my Schrade 863. Just received it two days ago, nearly in unused condition, but had a few spyderwebs on the blades. Cleaned them, put a vinegar patina on them and everything is fine. And for some reason I instandly fell in love with it. It´s not one of my best build knives, it´s not one of most usefull ones, and it´s not one of the most beautifull ones- but somehow it feels right

Still in catch-up mode for this thread (and last night I forgot to even answer the question in the thread title:rolleyes:),

Western #822 on this chilly Saturday morning -42F wind chill

That's a bewitching Barlow, Steve!:thumbsup::thumbsup: But how do you take outside pics in cold that brutal?? I usually have to take 5 shots for every "keeper", and I don't think I can operate the shutter with gloves on, so my fingers would fall off taking knife photos in -40 conditions!
Thanks GT and yes the pouches are occupied
That's a LOT of Leathermen and tools, Steve!:cool::thumbsup:

Thanks to Jeff (Black Mamba) I'm rockin' the suburbs with my first Rough Rider.

Congrats, Mark!:cool::thumbsup: Is that an Armor Hide medium stockman?

Hope everyone had a great Christmas :) I've had these two with me today (both picture at Whitby in North Yorkshire, where I've been for a short break)

Welcome back from Whitby, Jack!:) Nice photos of a pair you've been favoring recently, I think!:thumbsup: In fact, here they come again! ;):cool::p
... I'm carrying a GEC and an A.Wright today, in terms of fit and finish, I'd say these two are on a par, both excellent

The other day I rediscovered my Case chestnut bone CV sowbelly, I really like the way this knife sits in hand and in the pocket. I don't currently have a photo host and haven't yet figured out how to create an album here yet, so sorry for the lack of a pic. ...
That's a very attractive model, Duane!!:thumbsup::thumbsup: (If you have photos on your computer (or phone, I assume), you can use the "Upload a File" button next to "Post Reply" to post pics directly.)

I love all my knives. I had to carry a new set for our afternoon dog walk.

Really like the 2-dog, 1-folder pic, Travman!:cool::thumbsup:

With todays temp, I'm going a little Banana's

...
That looks good, AND good for you, Paul!:thumbsup::cool:;)

Leslie, that's an intriguing sheepfoot Barlow with its swayback handle and faceted brass bolster!!:thumbsup::cool:
Nice knife Leslie, but your buddy isn't very impressed.

1970’s Case Red Bone Canoe.

I searched for one of these for several reasons. First, the etching on these knives required a chemical process that actually slightly engraved the blade. It will not fade away. Second, Case used a single spring then. The current models are much thicker because of the additional spring. Finally, the Case Red Bone is always great.
A classic, no doubt! I have a couple myself, based on the same reasons that you mentioned.
That Case canoe is killer, Leslie!!!:thumbsup::cool::thumbsup::thumbsup: And @The Fort recently sold me one of his! ;):thumbsup: (Not sure if mine is the fabled red bone, though; I'd call it dark burgundy or rich reddish brown, but I have no first hand experience.)

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife. Like many, my wife and I have been through this and I’d like to share a thought that came from an old college friend ...

Cancer sucks! As you face this journey, laugh when you can, cry when you need to, and know that you are never alone.

God bless you!

+ 5K!! :thumbsup::thumbsup: Well said, John!

Seems I'm turning into a 2 a day guy!

Beautiful bone bonanza right in the palm of your hand, Rob!!:thumbsup::cool:
Thanks @Lostball! I appreciate the warning, I'll order new leather slips:thumbsup:
Don't forget the fanny pack to carry all those slips full of knives, Rob! :p:D

...Today I have been carrying my two knives of the year for 2017! Sometime tomorrow I’ll have to pick the winner and post it in Jack’s thread!

Two compelling candidates, Ron; I don't envy the decision you must make!:thumbsup::cool:

I'm carrying these two for New Year's Eve :) Have a good one folks

Jack, I don't know if your 2 appealing black knives represent distinguished black-tie partygoers, or if you're predicting dark days ahead in 2018!

After a clean and sharpen its in my pocket.
That's a stupendous stag Lloyd, bonzodog!! :eek::cool::thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:

Case Serpentine Jack
Case CV 65 Stockman in bone.
And I even took a picture

And a nice photo of some classic knives it is, deltaboy!!:cool::cool:

I don´t think, this will be a good idea. ... I think, the only way to carry this type of knives without destroying your pockets is to store it in a nice leather pouch. ...

Thanks for the informative discussion of my idea, Dirk and Jake.:thumbsup::cool::thumbsup: I might try rounding off the sharp corner on an old knife, but I certainly won't "experiment" on the Joker!

I had a good friend gift me this 92 last night. So it will be with me today.

Congrats, HWF!!:thumbsup: That's a beautiful knife with stunning brown jigged bone!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Stockman for this last week of 2017 has been a Marbles stag bone sowbelly (thanks, Randy):

Thanks GT, I also have to take a few shots to get a good one. My hands are good for a couple minutes in that kind of cold without gloves and it doesn't take that long to snap a few pics

LOL! :D Thanks pal, the 66 was an Xmas present some years ago, and only my second GEC :)
