What Type of Knife Knut are you?

IMO, buying something and putting it in the safe or not using it is like, having a supermodel GF and not having sex with her to save her for the next guy.

I hope I never have to use my knives in a civilian setting, but I only carry my knives as defensive/offensive weapons. A handgun isn't always the best weapon to protect one's self. If I have to use a knife for cutting something it's always at home or I just keep my mouth shut about my knife in public. I have tools (knives) I use for my yard, but they are just for that purpose.

I find myself wanting to get a few "high end" pocket knives - slipjoints - but I have a very clear idea of what I want. I will wait, but with that being said, I found the custon knifemaker's sub-forum, and it's hard to keep myself in check. However, I will tote one everyday and use it to cut stuff or jizz on.

I don't consider a knife for self defense myself. I use mine to open mail, open packages, dice onions and other veggies, slice brauschweiger and other lunchmeats, whittle sticks for marshmallows, stab teenagers who try to put me in a box, make tent stakes, cut cord, cut out coupons when I can't find a scissors, open cans of spagheti, core apples, peel oranges and such.

If I have it, I use it. If I have it and don't like using it, or choose others over it consistently... I get rid of it.

im a fixed blade guy, i have bucks , gerber, and my terzuola is my fav i use mine try to keep them in good shape if i ever trade them but i dont lock them away. i know knife guys that do that , but a knife is something you enjoy to use not locked away

I have a user focus, but how many knives do you actually need? I ended up getting rid of the majority of knives that I wouldn't want to use. They were replaced with carefully nitpicked knives that I would want to use. Despite wanting to have users, my great abundance has led to a hoard of usable safe queens.

I carry and use hard
I carry a benchmade adams 275 that I broke the blade, I carry a esee 3 but it's more for self defense if the gun fails.

I’m the . . . I love the old “Steam Punk” look of lots of brass and gun blued metal with a bunch of nickel silver plating thrown in cause I can’t live without it . . . I love super thick blades like my Japanese wood working plane blades, way thicker than Western blades for the same purpose, with hand chiseled Japanese characters right into the heavy iron top layer (none of this namby pamby acid etching here guys ((( (though I love acid etching too )))) . . . so I am strongly draw to the mass and brass . . . see photos bellow . . .

However
:o
when I reach for a knife . . . especially and for me . . . only for city slicker work like plastic wire ties and lots of carboard and food preparation . . . well I go through a change that would make Superman swoon with vertigo . . . I reach for the thinnest dang knife I can lay hands on.

We are talking, are you ready, point four millimeter with a way shallow grind ( 0.4 mm) for the box knife . . . only slightly thicker for the wire ties a SAK Secretary using the small blade at 0.9 mm.

Blazeing along to the kitchen same goes; really thin stuff though I can’t resist the layered steel of the Japanese knives.

For my general EDC I have the hots for getting one of these (I like the dark handle (and the blade of course), but go way shorter blade more like the shortest one in this set) and make a sheath for it. Time will tell if I come to my senses before I pull the trigger and leap into the unknown.

So there . . . my name is Wowbagger The Infinitely Prolonged and . . . I’m a thin knife user.

(so to answer your question I like both a whole lotta) (I don’t know how many Red Blade Pigs and Extrema Fulcrums I’ll be buying though; probably go easy on those for a while) :)

I've never bought a knife and not used it unless it didn't feel right when I got it. Or if I kind of liked it but had a feeling I might not keep it I may have went easy on it in anticipation of knowing I would sell it. But if I really liked it I definitely used it, regardless of price. (has never been over $450)

I primarily buy knives to use them, but I do have some knives (>4.5" bladed folders & many of my fixed blades) which I bought primarily for collection purposes or disaster preparedness/WROL.

I consider worn coating, dings and nicks in the blade, etc. to be badges of honor.

I like all traditionals, kitchen knives, fillet knives, straight razors, small fixed, large fixed, stainless fixed, swords, daggers, balisongs, autos, out-the-fronts, basic steels, super steels, imports, inexpensives, plain ones, full dress, high $ art, productions, customs, in-betweens, multi-tools, tantos, almost any and every style. I've always loved knives and I carry one every day, usually a 2-4 inch folder of any kind.

I would describe my collecting habits as, "chasing the dream." I focus on collecting variety and have knives that are sort of pigeon holed into categories and then categories within categories. Some things I have more for necessity than because I'm interested. For example, I don't have a lot of large blades and the large blades I do have, I only have 1 of that category: 1 heavy kukri, 1 machete, 1 10" blade. But EDC sized and chef knives I have many of. For example, my American law man is my main edc, most of the time because I lot the ergo's and it's cheap enough that I won't get mad if a lose it. I consider my manix 2 my higher end edc. I also get the basics like opinels, SAKs, carbons, stainlesses, etc. etc. If I don't like a knife that I buy I give it away as a gift, and this brings in room for a new one. The exciting thing to me is when you get that knife that is just perfect for you and exceeds expectations.

I think a good caveat to your questions about what type of collector are you? Would be, what keeps you collecting, what are you looking for when you keep looking? Mine is all about the best knife I've never used.

I admire, own, and use knives of many types. Some are cheap, and some are expensive. Some are new and some come from the flea market. About the only pattern I follow is that a new, to me, knife is babied for awhile, then eventually becomes a user. Then I get a new knife to baby and the cycle continues.......Over and over.
