What would you want in a Delica 5?

You guys aren't going to get G10. We've got a good idea what a G10 Delica would cost and it's not the price range that the Delica needs to live in.

For everyone asking for a Delica 5 with a choil and a wire clip... just get a Caly 3 already :D

That said, a Delica design (with FRN) that has a choil and a deep-carry wire clip is probably something that I would buy :p

That is why I said that Spyderco should just bring back the Caly 3 in FRN and a wire clip. Or the Caly Jr. Lets just nag Sal until he complies. :p

miltmaldo is referring to the knife when viewed from the side. The gap being a squared off portion at the base of the blade that is exposed when the knife is closed. When opened fully, the squared portion snaps into place against the lock bar at the spine of the knife.

Is it this? If so I agree, would seem very easy to fix, especially if they added a choil.

.050"?! Is that even feasible? That is about half the thickness of the current FFG.
It's the blade thickness of a Spyderco K05 4.5" Utility Knife, so it has to be feasible. Aside from the normal wear and tear of use and sharpening, I haven't bent, broken, or otherwise damaged my K05 yet, so I can't see any good reason a folder blade that thickness wouldn't stand up to normal use in a Delica or Stretch size platform. I suspect a fair portion of traditional slippies have blades that thin. For a midlock, it might work better if the tang was thicker, but that could be accomplished by wrapping another piece of the same steel around it.

Not that I expect any of my suggestions ever to appear on the Delica. To be honest, I hope they never do. The Delica is designed to appeal to a certain audience, and it's done that consistently well for over twenty years. My tastes are different, but I know I'm in the minority. I can hope Spyderco will produce an occasional knife that excites me, but I'd never expect them to revise one of their flagship models to do so. My post was mostly meant to demonstrate that nothing is ever going to appeal to everyone.

Make it lighter by removing the liners, the Delica does not really need it. Also make the blade from 2mm or 1.5mm stock and lose the Boye dent.

NO CHOIL !! Waste of space! VG10 ROCKS for a user steel far superior to S30V IMO.

I love my delica 4; I have however modified mine to suit my tastes, a rounded spine to stop the thin blade digging into my hand, and straightened the spine to give a more defined but less robust tip.

One thing I would change is do away with TIP DOWN MOUNTING HOLES, I know most people don't use them and it just allows all kind of dirt to get into the pivot, they suck big time.

Totally agree on all of this. Except for the spine part, that doesn't bother me. But I really do think you can pack more edge in that knife. It should be sharpened all the way back to the handle, unlike how it is now.

I'd be in. In trying to wrap my head around that level of thickness in a locking knife I checked out some Spyderco's and was shocked at the Centofante 3. It is .078" I will be picking one of those up soon. I had heard the Chapral was thin, but it is quite a bit smaller so that is to be expected, but the Centofante 3 is 3.125" long. That is sure to be an excellent medium duty slicer. Now that I am thinking about it, I bet a Skyline is about that thin.

Guys, why do you want G10? The volcano grip is better. Also, I've accidentally dropped my Delica 4 on concrete and it hasn't shown any sign of damage. FRN is some extremely durable material! I have a feeling that G10 would have gotten scuffed up in the same circumstance. Also, a choil isn't necessary on a sub 3" blade. You don't need to choke up on a sub 3" blade. We will be better off with more cutting edge on the Delica. It will be a more useful knife if it has more cutting edge.

I use my Gentleman Jim at work more often than my Endura wave because of the G10. I carry them in my left back pocket and put my left thumb down along the side of the handle to draw them. The G10 on the Emerson is a sure grip every time while the Endura sometimes turns on my thumb grip by the force of the wave action. I'm considering sanding down the FRN and applying skate board tape but so far I've just been looking for a G10 Endura to swap with.

I don't have a Delica right now, but here's a Cento 4 and Skyline side by side:

Here was a similar thread:

IMO, the Delica is a flagship model of Spyderco, much like the Endura, Military and should be left as is.

It sounds like everyone just wants a Caly 3 with FRN.

Just my 2 cents.

Yep, I posted in that very thread.

I get what you're saying, but look at your own examples: the Endura and Military have changed over the years. Not much, but they have, and in all likelihood, they will continue to change. That's what Spyderco's "CQI" is all about: refining and updating a design to suit the needs of their consumer base at any given point in time. If the Endura or Delica were left alone, we wouldn't have a repositionable and replaceable pocket clip, nor an adjustable pivot. We wouldn't have a full flat ground blade or the comfort and function of the Boye dent in the lock bar.

Thus far, Spyderco has been extraordinarily prudent in the design changes they've employed in all of their longstanding models and that isn't likely to change any time soon. If they don't think the market is there (or ready) for a choil or a different grind, or different handle materials, or if they determine that these changes can't be made without altering the price point at which these models reside, have no fear; you won't see them. I'm certain they won't modify their core models in any way that will fundamentally change their utility, basic functionality or universal appeal.

The choil modification shown previously in this thread, is an excellent example: the basic grip and function of the knife remains the same. The usable edge hasn't been altered or scaled back and fully supports a grip that doesn't use the forward choil. Should that be applied to a final production model, I really can't see how it would negatively affect the longstanding comfort and functionality to any appreciable degree.

I'm certain we'll see changes in the Delica and Endura line in the future and I think Spyderco has a proven track record of introducing features that add utility and comfort to established designs without distorting the original intent.

I have to disagree there to an extent. Sure G10 would add a bit to the cost, but I think they could still keep under $80 if the only thing they did was to bring back the G10 scales.

Lose the steel liners and keep everything else the same. I think SS liners are unnecessary for Delica's blade length and target purpose of EDC.

I think I'd want a pure G10 handle Delica 5, maybe the cost would be able to stay down because there would be no steel liners to drill.

-I also don't get this. The Tenacious family, Cat, etc... come in G10 and are priced less than the Delica. I always assumed that blade steel was a much more important to the final price than handle material. For example, you can currently pick up a Sage 1 or Chaparral (S30V) in CF for less than the Native 5 (S35VN) in G10... Probably not a fair comparison, but the "big name" (lol) Chinese makers like Sanrenmu and Enlan also produce knives in G10 and Micarta for under $20.

No knock on FRN and not trying to start an argument or derail the thread, just legit curious and a little confused. Is the extra cost in texturing, fit & finish, recessed liners, a bit of each??

Two things that would improve the Delica:
1. Use the blade stop mechanism currently employed by the Native 5 and Sage 4. Lock up goes from safe and secure to rock solid.
2. Make the blade pointy again. I don't expect this change as it would be a step "backwards." I prefer a pointy blade.

To everyone suggesting to axe the liners because they aren't necessary: actually, they are. I don't think you can simply twist the clip screws into FRN without it stripping, the liners provide something for the clip screws to thread into.

The G-10-clad knives that you see for bargain prices typically come with bargain steel and are produced in China which I'm gonna assume incurs lower production costs than Spyderco's other manufacturing locations. The Japanese VG-10 in the Endura and Delica likely makes up a large portion of the cost. Finally, buyers have grown accustomed to the Endura/Delica line being released in many different, eye-catching colors. G-10 comes in only a select number of colors and I'm betting prices vary according to popularity. Adding in G-10 while maintaining the same price point would very likely result in three things:

1. A reduction in the quality of the steel, bumping the series down from VG-10 to 8CR13MOV or similar.

2. Manufacturing being moved to China, along with all the pros and cons that involves.

3. A single color of G-10, presumably black.
