What would you want in a Delica 5?

Thanks AYB,

That makes a lot of sense. After thinking about it more, I probably started to answer my own question as well... I'm guessing that while G10 itself isn't terribly expensive, it comes in blocks that have to be cut, sanded, drilled, etc... (i.e. labor intensive), whereas the FRN is probably injection molded or something so that the scales can be turned out in quantity more or less ready to go, with much less overall expense involved.

I think that's probably exactly right. However, I hope my post didn't make it sound like I wouldn't want a full run of G-10 in various colors, because I absolutely would! I'd love to have a blue or orange Endura in G10 with nested (or no) liners. I'd pay more for sure!

A factory deep carry clip would be fantastic! Other than that I can't think of anything else, the Delica 4 is already perfect!

The Delica is my most carried blade and close to perfect. The only changes that I would like to see are a deep carry wire clip (my favourite clip) and the addition of an internal stop pin (a la Chaparral). I like the way the handle fits my hand as is, no choil for me!

If there were a new Delica, I would like to see the option of a deep carry wire clip. Something that disappears completely like the Caly 3.5. Given the choice, I like to fly under the radar and not have a big piece of scale sticking up out of my pocket.

Deep carry wire pocket clip and more steel choices; otherwise it’s an awesome knife the way it is.

I love the delica design the way it is. To me the main draw is the light weight of the knife. I have the G10 sprint and I rarely carry it because it is just too heavy for a knife that size. If I had my way I would keep the lower price VG10 model and supplement it with a higher price version with a better steel. I have delicas/enduras in VG10 but mostly carry my ZDP models because of the increased edge holding and cool factor. I would replace the ZDP with something awesome like 20cp or 204p.

I imagine the Delica is staying produced in Japan. With that being said, you will most likely not see any steel not made in Japan on a Delica.

I also would like to see some high quality U.S. steels on the Delica but that isn't likely to happen. Japanese manufacturers do not want to work with foreign steels.

I have to disagree there to an extent. Sure G10 would add a bit to the cost, but I think they could still keep under $80 if the only thing they did was to bring back the G10 scales.
So, you think the cost of manufacturing a knife with G-10 scales in Japan has dropped by roughly 20% since 2009? Personally, I find that rather hard to believe. MSRP of the G-10/VG-10 Delica was $180 then, putting the street price anywhere from $100 up and the FRN/VG-10 versions that now have a $105 MSRP were $90.

My dream Delica 5 has a compression lock, FRN handles, no choil, and the edge all the way back to the handle like a Tenacious. Compression lock would make this safer to close one handed than a Tenacious because your hand stays out of the path of the edge when closing, unlike a liner lock or mid lock. Having more edge on a blade the same length would boost the utility of a Delica for my uses, without affecting its legality. I agree with others who see no need for a choil on a sub-3" bladed folder.

Other than that I like it how it is now. If there was another good way to anchor a four way clip, I could live without the liners. But they don't bother me now.

Comp lock Delica? Wouldn't the lockswitch be too small? I can see it already, the whining that will ensue. It wouldn't be a Delica that's for sure. It'd be more like a micro Para2 with no choil.

G10, maybe a frame lock version? That would be pretty cool. A delica handle and blade but being able to close it easier would be great. And I love frame locks. The handles would have to be a little bit bigger though. :)

I would have to agree with "The Deacon", based on the price of the Starmate which is G10/VG-10 I can't see a similar outfitted Delica being less than $100. That might be why they will not stray from FRN unless it is a Sprint, to keep the Delica affordable. IMO

Deep carry clip ( not the wire type ). Keep it FRN but with a full flat grind H1 blade, I know it's harder to grind but I'm willing to pay the extra. This would be my dream delica 5.

I think actually it is pretty much impossible to do FFG H1
