Well, it takes a lot of Bucks and Gerbers to equal 3/4 million dollars!
Hahaha as jimmy said maybe that's why it took 3 weeks to sort through the bullsh*t.
That's why it took 3 weeks to go through them all.

I can't say I ever had someone do something like that to me. However there is this one guy I knew a few years back that every word that came out of his mouth was bullshit. Everyone knew him as a bullshitter and I swear he couldn't help himself. "Yeah I took down a 16 point buck yesterday with a spear" or "I used to own a brand new Porche but I had to trade it for my 15 year old pick up truck". Stuff like that, haha. Funny and pretty sad all at the same time.
This is exactly the case my friend! He was looking through his work bag for some strippers and goes "oh mannn my dad used my strippers and didn't put them back" so I handed him a old pair I had and he noticed they were 'Klein' and goes "ohh yah yah man I had some bada$$ Kleins ones just like this"

Give me a break I can't take this guy seriously any more. Too bad he's a decent worker.

The exact numbers in his story are what most scream BS to me. 33 years collecting and $758K. And of course $758K is a very large number.
These exact figures aren't even his...their his grandfather's. Load of crap.
Glad someone else sees the crap spewing from this mans mouth, funny some here that seem to be acting for him

And with those numbers that over $20,000 a year in knife purchases. I want that knife budget!

Hell, I've only spent 1000$ on my edc knife rotation and I can't see how I could spend anymore.

Edit: I guess I could work in a custom or two in there but at that point they would just be safe queens.

Who knows?

Maybe the Grandfather was a collector who focused on vintage Scagel and Loveless knives...?

One thing to remember is many times when people have an item appraised it has absolutely nothing to do with what someone actually paid for an item. Especially if it's an appraisal for insurance. In those cases it's the cost of replacement. For instance my mother had the diamond earrings appraised and they were valued at $5000 she paid nearly half that.

I worked with a guy just like this. If you told him about something you owned, he had six of that same thing in his garage. You have a story, he has the same story only slightly more exaggerated. Every... single... time...

The running joke at that shop was he had an expanding garage and has an adventure every night

So, what you are saying is that the first liar doesn't stand a chance. Right?
We have all met someone like that at one point.

I don't see why this thread even exists. Is it a bragging thread that the OP owns a Sebenza that's admired by his coworkers? Is it a make-fun-of-your-dumb-coworkers thread? Is it a make-fun-of-knife-collectors thread?

I'm confused as to the merit, it just seems like a thread full of prejudices and not at all beneficial or informative.

Doing a project in Jacksonville, FL.

I hired a couple of day laborers to take care of the "grunt work". One noticed my CRK, and decided to strike up conversation about knives claiming his grandfather was into collecting them and has been for "33 years". Me being who Iam, I'm very skeptical of anyone I don't know/ care much for, but I decided to listen to this mans story as he was a "talker". He eventually told me that his grandfather had an "appraiser" come to place a value on his collection which mind you..claimed it took "3 weeks" to go through. When it was all said and done his grandfathers collection was worth a whopping $758,000!! It was by this time I knew I made a mistake to even give him the intial 45 seconds of my time at the beginning of the day when he struck up a convo about knives.

If you made it this far and actually read my ridiculous encounter with such a phony individual I'd love to hear if this has happened to you guys. I feel as if some people exist on this world to see what they can get people to believe or maybe they are just trying to impress everyone they meet? Who knows ..
I like story time. My philosophy is to let them keep going. I've had coworkers tell some outrageous lies. Everything from being a teenage drug dealer moving kilos to this scar on my hand is from the time three guys tried to kill me. It is amazing how stories will change over time and how they get completely debunked. The previously mentioned fellow with a scar on his hand accidentally cut himself working as a butcher.

Worst I run into is when I have something nice on me, usually a Spyderco, and they will want to check it out. Immediately after getting it I hear "oh man this is ok but I got all kinds of knives better than this" which so far has been a Case Trapper (not too bad), a Buck Bantam, and a few MTech Tac-Force elite operator specials. One guy went as far as to hold up a blue MTech, point at a big gaudy word on the blade that said NAVY, then lectures me how it says Navy right on there and it has to be the best to be a military issue piece and my Japanese toy couldn't compete. I restrained laughter and tried to explain... Reality... But to no avail. I must just be jealous and the $15 he paid was like hitting the lottery. Deal. Of. A. Lifetime.

Custom shop bucks and bucks customized by people like David yellowhorse aren't cheap, so you could get there without that many Buck knives if you really tried.

That's nothing compared to what vintage William Scagel or Bob Loveless knives sell for.
Google them...

True that, but 3/4 million dollars? That's still a whole bunch of Bucks!
That's definitely a lot, and I don't really buy the story much either.

I'll bet I know the real story , the guys grandfather probably does own a lot of knives but they're probably just a few of those mega sets sold on cutlery corner for 150$.
His grandfather probably has 600 knives that he spent 400$ on which are actually only worth 1200$ ( you can get 2$ for them all day long at the flea market )
But since he doesn't really know anything about knives he went ahead and exaggerated.

Maybe it was hitlers knife or george washington's battle saber... OR ... he just wanted to impress you with made up stuff.

This seems to be the most logical explanation.

This reminds me of my buddy Mike, a lot. He has several classic cars , gun collections and whatever else he has stated over the years, in his basement. Yes his basement . We always wondered how he got them down there. :)
