The "stub" could also be a spear or a spey, IMO.

Do not tread in the Moose turd

Hey Robuck, finally solved the "moosetique" of your head art.........it's Col. Sanders secret family recipe of herbs and spices.Be careful my friend your head has suddenly become very valuable.

This pattern is proving to be quite mooseterious.

I think the stub on T. Erdelyi's knife was a "moose foot", which is a larger variation of the sheep's foot. :D Google it.

Actually I just made that up. Anyway, that is a very cool old knife and I really hate that it's broke. I'd grind that broken blade into something useful and carry it. ;)

This thread is very amoosing, don't you think.:p

Now I see this and I wonder, is a Moose, Texas Jack or a Cattle Knife?

If you go by Bernard Levine's Guide (LG IV), that knife would be a Bull-Head which is an equal-end, double-end knife based on the cattle pattern.

(I'm going to guess that your broken blade was originally a spear blade but it's immaterial to the above.)

I'm officially boycotting this thread because it is getting silly

Just w/ it was getting good, though.
The only thing I'd like to add & it's dead serious,I'd like to see Kerry build a moose , use some of that moose he's got,for scales, too That, would be a mooseterpiece!!

It's a Moose ?

Yes, I know I'm resurecting a 4 day old thread. Sue me. :p I've been off-line for a week.

I have one thing to say for this thread; Ugh. Y'all are nuts!

Well, OK two things;
what do we do when this knife crosses the Atlantic? after all, what most people in Europe call a moose, is an ELK in North America!

I got a whole slew of moose jokes(AK is full of the darned things, unfortunately-- A Maverick? heh. you should see a motorcycle hit one... not fun.) but ya'll have covered all the good one liners, and it seems most of the BAD ones... Lol..

Seriously...you didn't think I could let this thread go that easy :D

After a more in-depth study into moosedom, I have determined that I know less than I knew and subsequently find that I am doing reverse learning about the moose pattern. Therefore, I am actually overwriting conflicting data(in my brain) with yet more conflicting data. As Bullwinkle would always tell Rocky, "Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!"

This is what Case and a close friend of mine ;) calls a Texas Jack:
hsb-case-texasjacks.jpg

I tend to agree, since it falls into the catagory of what is GENERALLY CONSIDERED a jack knife with both blades pivoting on one end. But some hairbrained individual or individuals decided to confound and confuse the issue by saying a jack knife has a blade in both ends.

When I see a semi "jack knifed" on a highway, it's only bent in one place dammit..so that ends that discussion right there. :D (I know you smartypants guys would bring up the occasional wrecked semi that is pulling two trailors...that would be a MOOSE KNIFED SEMI!(which is easier than saying, DOUBLE END TRAPPER KNIFED SEMI!!!)

Kerry - Are those Texas Jacks longer than 4"? That HSB with the extra long pull is sweet!

Schrade called any of the 4" frame stockman with squared bolsters a Texas Pattern, with any 2 blade configuration a Texas Jack. There is one configuration not pictured, a 2813 with a spear and pen combination.

You can see three different blade configurations here, all with the clip labeled a Texas Jack. These are from the 1926 Schrade Cut Co catalog, pages 46 - 47. I believe the DE Moose Vince displayed is shown, likely a Schrade Cut Co 7813.

They called the stockman with a rounded bolster a Premium Stock. Wish I had real examples of these instead of catalog pictures. That 4 blade MOP M9806 would be a real looker.
