Rick, that is perfect! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain it. That looks awesome man! Going to be one hell of a shop, and made to last!

It's been way too long since I've posted anything, but I've been busy. Lately it has been kitchen knives. I have a pile of various kitchen knives cut out, profiled, and heat treated and just finished three of them for Christmas. All the blades are AEB-L, the santoku are .110 and the smaller knives are .070. Two were a matching set with burlap phenolic from ShadeTree and the other a paring knife with koa.

Just finished these up. Both are 5" petty kitchen knives in cpm154 at 61rc. Ivory micarta and cocobolo handles. I still have an 8" chef's and a hunter to finish before Christmas. Next year I'm going to try and have a bunch of blades finished up and just waiting on handles. This past month has been a little crazy to say the least. I also had a show this weekend that almost wiped out my stock pile of hunters.

Looking really nice Matt! Are you using one of Nathan's platens by chance? If so I just wanted to ask how you like it.
No pics of the show?

Thanks Brock! I wish I had one of Nathan's platens but it won't work on my grinder. It would keep me from chasing 2 inch marks on my 8" chef's knives. By the time I thought to take pictures I only had 2 left on the table. I am going to Charleston SC valentines weekend for the Southeastern Wildlife Expo and will be taking a handful of kitchen knives. I will be sure to get some pictures.

Been slow going on this one, but it's still moving forward.

The handle will have four spiral flutes and twisted stainless wire... at least that's the plan. Fluting layout gets really tricky with drop-handles, but I think I came up with a method that works... it's just not easy. ;)

Here I have laid out the cut-lines for the wire grooves with blue tape.

Much of the initial shaping of the grooves was done with a 1/2" round bastard file, followed by a half-round file to start widening things out.

Here I am starting to chase out the grooves with sand paper on a 1" rubber sanding drum (hand-held). Still have a lot of work to do... but it will get prettier.

And here, I have started shaping the butt cap. I have also punched several locations that will end up as holes for securing and aligning the cap.

Next steps will be:
  • Complete rough-shaping and threading of butt cap.
  • Finish sanding of all fittings.
  • Finish shaping/sanding/polishing of blade.

The final handle assembly and wire work will happen just before final assembly/epoxy of the knife.
I'm hoping I can ramp up enthusiasm to bring this one to a close... as my brain keeps wanting to jump to other projects. ;)

I am in a similar situation. I have a pile (19) heat treated AEB-L in .110 and .070 blanks on the bench also. I have 3 with wood on them and 3 ready for wood. I need more time! Jess

I just signed a 5 month lease, indicating that I'll be closing my computer repair storefront in the summer. In the meantiime I'll be constructing a 40x60 work building to move the forge manufacturing into. I'm also setting up workspace for a couple fellow makers to use, so the shop should be pretty nice. Basically, I'm building a new shop! I plan to have dedicated painting, cutting, welding, and grinding rooms with dedicated air filtration systems.

I modified two of Brett's platens on the Esteem grinder to take Nathan's platen. What grinder do you have? What's the distance between wheels?
I just got his extra long platen and haven't fit it up yet. Might have to make a new assembly for it if I want both wheels as an option with it.

I semi-built mine. I got it from my father-in-law. It was only setup to run a contact wheel. I made a platen but its only about 8'' between wheels. I will be building a grinder soon and hope to get one of Nathan's platens. I think it would help out on the kitchen knives for sure.

those little 2" marks are a PITA with thin chef knives!

Here's one I just shipped out for a fellow member. First time using Kirinite. I'm not running out to replace all my stock with Kirinite, but I'd definitely use it again.
8.5" W-2 blade, Toxic green and black Kirninte with Micarta pins (one hidden) and frame handle with G-10 spacer

One of these days I'll be able to take a decent picture that doesn't have 6 different shadows on it :grumpy:

Its just been me and the bandsaw. I visited an old closing wood shop and picked up a bunch of material, one of which turned out to be a log of real Brazilian king wood!

And i finally found the shot of all of my redwood burl "thank you Fort bragg fire department!"

I usually grind normally most of the way, but at the end that platen lengthwise is great for showing you your imperfections and straightening them out.

I made four of these for a friend of mine to give as corporate gifts for his business. He and a few of his colleagues go on a moose hunting trip every year. This year, he used one of my knives and I guess the guys liked it.
