yep. Found it works on these high carbide content steels. Been taking S110V to 3000 grit pre-ht then backing it off to the finish I want post HT.

He is what I have been working on for the last month. This a custom order for a local chef in a well known restaurant in my area. My biggest order by far and I am very honored that the guy chose a newbie like me to make him a full set. Blades are 440C, all tapered tang and distal taper (except the veggie chopper, no distal taper). The customer wanted filework on every knife. I can tell you that after 3 days of filework, my hands were hurting a bit lol. The blades will be mirror polished with dovetail bolsters. Seems like he likes shiny things!

The customer also wanted a case and a carry bag. I chose to make it out of cedar. Still need to make the carry bag.

Had to plane them with my handplane (buy once, cry once... bought myself a lie nielsen. Such a pleasure to use), they were curved like bananas. After gluing together the planks to make a board, I stained the whole thing (had to make my own stain, none of the stains I tried did good result, this is a mix of 3 stains and black pigment). After that I have put lacquer on it and polished it, still need a bit more tho.

Let me know if the videos do not work.
Have a good weekend and be safe!

Plus 1 on those profiles and I love that sculpted handle. The san mai blade looks fantastic. Do you make it your self?

So, I finished the z-max edc. I’m not impressed with my dyed stabilized zebrano. It looks muddy to me. If you catch the light just right, it looks ok, but it just looks like dirty wood to me. It took me three times as long to put an edge on it as it does for me to put an edge on z-wear. It doesn’t get so screaming sharp like z-wear either. It will shave hair, but there is a little drag to it. Sheath is a simple utility sheath. I like the buckskin dye.

The second knife is .224” 8670, hardened to Rc62. I went to 0.005” before sharpening. Effortless to sharpen it. Black g-10 guard, with orange g-10 scales. I would never normally use stock this thick for a knife this size, but I used this one of two as a grinding example for my workshop groups before Covid19 isolation hit. It’s easy to see the tapers and plunges on thicker stock. I misaligned the pin holes by not paying attention. I was going to redo them, but my friend picked up the knife and insisted he had to have it, so he gets it as is. I’ll steal it back at some point and put oversized pins in it, or new scales, if needed.

The tapers are obvious when the stock is this thick. The knife is still bloody heavy.

Z wear laminate testing , possible success

I was trying in the fall but failed with a few attempts. I might have one successful billet to forge out.
I hope this works for you, and hope you are successful with future billets.

It's Orange G10 Rod. I bored it out on a mini lathe. This was an exercise in frustration as the g10 tends to split. I threw away several pieces that split all down the side.

Thumb twiddling time in the shop for now. Got a carbide scribe in the mail yesterday, so I made a simple block-type for the granite sink cutout. Just a 1" chunk of aluminum, milled then drilled for 2 set screws. It's a bit on the primitive side, I just use # drills for the depth setting between the steel & the block, but it works well enough.

Have been away from the hobby for a few years but like many the lockdown has given me some free time. This was a paring knife I had shaped the blade of a few years ago that I just got around to finishing. Not the best, but I'm happy with how it turned out and will be able to replace some of my cheap Chinese kitchen knives. Hoping to improve, learn, and begin to contribute to the forum more.
