How did you get that long of a thin slot drilled though? I didn't know they make that long of a drill bit that skinned hahaha
On this one hole is 6mm and slot is 3mm .This time I drill that 6mm hole from both side .....I have drill bits long 6 , 12 inch ................With them , first I drill about two inch deep with normal size drill bits as guide for long drill bit which i use after that.....
Google extra long drill bits :)

Thank you, N Natlek I felt almost certain that you'd have made your own, and wanted to see not only the material and construction but shape. Simply put, you're more creative than me with tools. I know how to make pharmaceuticals, poison poeple, blow shit up, etc, as a chemist, but mechanical comes with effort. And those are nice slots. :) I use the same technique as you with the hole drilled first with a bit thick enough not to wander. I used a lot of stag, so used a 3/8" (9.5mm :) ) bit to get the spongey core out, then slotted.

I have a purchased broach from John Perry and one David Wesner (RIP) made and gifted me.

I have a couple I've made from jigsaw blades but they're too short for much use other than the specific reason I ground them.

There's a little bag of spent reciprocating saw blades somewhere in the shop, so I will try to use your examples as ideas. Thank, you, sir! It's appreciated. I haven't made any full tang knives in a long time, so it is good to see what people are using now for digging the holes. 12 years away has produced a lot of change.

Thanks, again, my friend.
You are welcome my friend , I m glad if i can help you  I like to make that slot as tight/precise as much as possible .................On this one i forget to cut little that block of wood before i start work on slot , it is longer then tang and i cut that part after I finish slot and end up with little bigger opening on rear side then end of tang. It is not problem at all but it bother me . I always try to make perfect things which are not visible on finished knife. Everything is upside down with me , I don't mind the visible scratch on the finished knife/blade and what only I know bothers me
I almost finished shape of handle ...

And keeping that slot tight was exactly why I asked the question. For many years, blades tended towards thicker steel. The broaches were made appropriately. As I began my hiatus, I was moving towards thinner steel and starting to make new broaches when health stopped me in my tracks. You've given me ideas, and I'm happy to borrow, credit where credit is due...

As for the slot bothering you, perhaps it is because, to you, it is a construction error, whereas the scratch is just an accident. If, so, I understand. I hate errors and I hate compromises, inside or out. It is funny, I pick up knives I made 30 years ago and can still tell you exactly the screw-up that made me keep it, inside or out. :) Yeah, I understand. High standards are how we get better.

That's a lovely pukko. Simple, elegant, understated. Nice! Thanks, again, for sharing!

A customer that I have dealt with quite a few times over the years contacted me and ask if I would make a "duplicate" of a knife he purchased from me 5 or 6 years back. I've always worked to make original pieces but since this gentleman has purchased a few knives from me I told him I would give it a shot. He sent me the money so I guess it was close. Fred

Cut out a pile of CPM Magnacut and NitroV blanks. I'm looking to get them surface ground as well as heat treated. I saw Jarod Todd offers both on his website, but he hasn't responded to me. If anyone knows a guy, help a brother out. I'm in the north Mississippi area

Jarod is the one I'm planning on doing my Magnacut. I don't think I would have it heat treated before getting it mostly done bevel wise, it's going to be very hard on belts once it's heat treated.

Is that a cleaned up Lauri blank and padauk?

I did a batch of 8 Magnacuts with Peter's Heat treating already. For some reason they did it at 59 hrc and now I cant give them away. So I'm done with Peter's. I ground all of those post heat treat, and they were pretty easy ( but that was at 59 hrc)

Wow, that would be disappointing.

Why in the world would they do that? Didn't Larrin recommend 62-64? I can't even imagine doing a steel like this less than 60, even for a big chopper type knife due to the toughness.

Did you talk to Brad about that? They've always made stuff right with me...

Very nice knife, Fred.

I almost called you to ask for help with the bubble jig this week, but I think it started to work for me. Still having trouble with grinding the tip of the knife, and the edge seems to swell from the ricasso to the tip, though. I was wondering if you have any pointers for those two areas.

I sent them out at the end of May. Within a few days of arrival they were listed as "tempering." 2 weeks later, still tempering. I called to see what was up. They told me Brad was out and would finish when he got back. Im guessing he was at blade show for part of it. Then 2-3 weeks more and they finally showed up. I was a bit unnerved by 59 hrc, so I message Larrin Thomas to see what he thought. He had no idea why they would have decided on 59. In all it was about 7 weeks of waiting with shipping, so I was more glad to have something to work on than upset about the hardness. Now, however, I would like to get some better HT done. I still have a few of the original magnacut blanks unfinished, but bevels are ground. So re-HT could be an option, but there would be some warping risk

Well thanks for the run down... I'm sending out about 100 fixed blades to Peter's in the next week or so so I will make sure the 63-64rc isn't a problem

I dont know. Neither Larrin nor I could see a reason to do 59.
I'm confused, did you not specify a hardness on your order form? I always do and they have always done it to the number I gave them. They say they will contact you to discuss it if you specify something unusual or impossible.

Those being the first magnacuts for me, I left it to their recommendation, which I suppose is where my culpability lies. I didn't know what hardness would be best between 60-63 like it says in the spec sheet. I was in the middle of finals, so I was trying to get them out the door. Later though I went and read the Magnacut article to see it's well balanced at 62-63, losing some toughness going higher, losing wear resistance going lower.
