I keep seeing mesquite here a lot. They sell good sized pieces where I live at the mexican grocery store around the corner store for bbqing. It makes me think I should go pick some up, and see what I can do with it. They usually have small logs (idk what the term would be) of it. I would just need to cut and shape them into blanks.

Thanks Eric I've admired your work as well. To blankblank-I got mine a couple years ago when my neighbor was really trimming a mesquite tree, I got a good load of limbs and logs 3-6". The larger ones are tough to process on my little table saw though. then a week later some pros were trimming an olive and I got a bunch of that too. Being in Phoenix they dried out pretty fast with painted ends to minimize checking. Smooth tight grain, pretty dense and easy to work.

Try to get crotch sections, mesquite has great chaotic grain, and it takes stabilizing pretty well

That's an interesting profile, what was it inspired by?
nothing in particular, although I'm inspired by the general body of work of a handful of culinary cutlers. I design knives based on how I like to use them, so I guess that's what the profile was inspired by?

I'm working on making a TL-29 Electrician's knife. The screw driver secondary tool has a wire stripper on the cutting edge and flathead on the tip. The first time I tried making this, I tried grinding the wire stripper bevels post heat treat on a 2x72. Unfortunately, the bevel width is less than 2", so it required more skill than I have and I ruined it. This time, I tried milling the bevels pre-heat treat. I think it came out very well. The bevel height will get lower when surface grinding after heat treat.

Very interesting project. I’m looking forward to seeing it when it’s finished.

Finished my first knife in Magnacut, a workhorse boning/butchering blade. It is 62 RC in 0.1 inch stock, 6.25 inch blade, 4.5 inch handle, 1.5 inch height at the heel. Handle is black palm with white brass pins.

Magnacut is pretty wear resistant. I took it to 600 grit, but I couldn't get it to finish clean there. Took it back to 400 grit, but it still took considerable time compared to AEB-L at this hardness. I think at 400 it still looks comparable to 800 grit for some reason.
