What's going on in your shop? Show us whats going on, and talk a bit about your work!

Wish I know a way to effectively do that, lol.
I mean please expand on what is happening, is it just the handle sticking out? I guess what your doing is pretty genius making what you have work!
ah- I get it. Yeah, this piece is a few inches longer than the depth of my oven, so I made a wall from fire brick to keep the heat in and keep it consistent. The handle's sticking out, and I'm pretty curious about what the hardness difference will be. I'm aiming for around 58 and am guessing the handle might end up around 50, but that's 100% pure hunch. This is a proof of concept job, so nailing the heat treatment isn't a priority. I want it to be good enough for testing, but I certainly wouldn't sell it since there are too many variables and compromises just to make it work

ps. to cut the fire brick to the dimension I needed, I used some of my broken portaband blades. Nice to find a use for them, lol

Turned some more rivets today,

Finished a couple danglers and got this sheath sewed up (that backstitch isn't as proud as it looks!)

It's a thick one.

Now I just need to clean up and burnish the spine, hot wax it, punch it, slick it, stamp it and it should be good to go. Retention is cherry atm and I aim to keep it that way.

Oh, and I took reception of some beautiful blocks of maple the other day gifted to me from C Cushing H. , really looking forward to turning them into puukko handles.

I’ve been working on my shop setup for the last couple of weeks. Built a new bench for everything and got it all mounted. Haven’t worked on a knife in about 3 weeks.
I got this monster put together and running.

Then I finished my straightening jig. It’s ugly but it works.

Then I cut up a bunch of wood my dad brought me for handle scales. A ton of walnut, some cherry, ash, and blackjack oak. Should be enough to last me for a while.

Your dad is awesome.

Kinda got behind on posting updates!

And cursing myself for not grinding S90V before HT! These are 5" x 2" wide, full flat grinds to make Shechita, which are Kosher slaughtering knives. Many, many hours and belts and I ordered ceramic Trizact and Norax belts because AO belts just burnish the steel only! I have 2 more with 4" blades to grind in hardened steel. I have another 2 that are 18" x 2.5" wide blades that are hardened, too. But I ordered more S90V and I will grind the big 2 before HT! I am going to try to use my Diamond cutting wheel in my Angle Grinder to cut up the bigger ones to make some smaller knives from to salvage that steel. These need fresh belts; if the belts aren't fresh, it just polishes/burnishes the steel. It's weird to see a nice reflection coming when grinding with a 36 grit belt!! The belts still have a lot of life in them, they just glaze over or something after a bit of cutting and then start burnishing!

That magnacut hidden tang is neat.

I have found the same thing too with steels like that. Just burnishes, but still belt life left. I save those belts for the simpler steels.

Yeah, I was grinding the blade and was noticing I saw the reflection of my fingers clearly...with a 36 grit belt! LOL. SIC belts cut the steel too, so I went between the SIC and ceramic Trizact and Norax belts to get a decent satin finish. It seemed to want a lot of pressure to grind, too, so I had to slow the belt way down and keep adding water. May need to rig up a Mister one of these days!

Yeah, I figured grinding one of the 18 x 2.5" blades would be similar to grind the 4, 5"x 2" blades and decided it would be cheaper to buy more steel, grind when soft and send out another HT batch! And much quicker!

I wouldn't mind it for an EDC/Hunting/Utility type knife, but these need a nice, smoother finish, which is a royal PITA!

A science experiment: I haven't done a hammer finish before nor a gyuto this thin. I couldn't catch it on camera with all the reflections, but the edge is about a mirror finish and 63+ hrc. I haven't put the edge on, but it's thin enough to cut already. I wonder how long it will last in use.

Finished this one today, Takefu vg10 sanmai 1.5mm / 1/16" steel thickness, 120mm/4.75" edge, japanese theme laser engraved. Redwood burl, with some burl spikes untouched at the end. Laser cut textured vegtan sheath.

Doing some experimenting with my new DD workrest bevel jig. I was skeptical that I could be happy with a sled style jig, but the on-the-fly adjustment combined with how well made it is, makes grinding bevels a breeze. Still working on my approach, as I find it very easy to hit the platen corner first with this style of jig, so the plunge line isn't so hot. Overall, it's a big improvement for me, so I'm happy.

My belt progression is 60>120>A160 trizact>800 grit cork loaded with green compound. Seems to make a nice finish without too much fuss. Did the flats similarly, started with 120 on the SGA, A160 on the platen, and then the 800 cork. Takes very little time for a nice working knife finish.
