MY... My/micarta

first crack at my own laminate... some old work pants with a rough texture. Cant wait to see how/if it turns out well on a handle.

Hell yeah, the porch counts as a shop... so does the lawn, basement, garage and my couch (I use the couch to fondle knives while watching tv... I tell her it's to ponder how it feels in the hand so I can fix it if required, but I just like playing with knives, lol) I've got blanks and half finished pieces all over the place. why limit the shop to one space?
I remember Rich Marchand (Really don't wan't to put words in his mouth), said something to the effect, to get started using whatever you had at the moment, I'm not broke (yet), and am not complaining I'm actually in the process of constructing a shop, life is superb right now. But this is my shop for the time being, I do appreciate the comment.

If I may? I suggest you make the start of the handle at the Riccaso thicker on the next one and ether give it an index finger cut out or make a longer area there for the index finger since it appears to be a 3 3 1/2 finger handle. It's important for indexing to have more from for that first finger.

I actually cut out another blank today, following your advise, a local knifemaker/ leather guy, actually told me the same thing, nearly, I appreciate the feedback, and have a real long ways to go.

You are quite welcome, Many before me kindly shared their knowledge with me and some still do! I've been at this since 96 and there is always a real long way to go!
if you think I can help you some more? Feel free to ask!

^^^ You're much older than I am I would have been a year old in 96 lol. Still, cutting out blanks, and profiling is the easy part, I bought a swag outdoors stand for my Dewalt Portaband, and it's one of those tools you look forward to using, makes life much easier, I cut out 2 or 3 blades with a hack saw, and Dremel, and figured there was a better setup out there. The portaband in a stand is a superb idea. I use it for a lot of non-knife stuff too. I've actually cut out far too many blades, I've got ahead of myself.

Just picked this BenchMaster mill today.

I've already taken it completely apart to start the restoration.
If anyone has one or has any info that maybe useful please let me know.

Built a fixture to mill wooden scales for our chef and paring knife. We're hoping to add the wooden scales to our line-up soon.

First fillet knife prototypes are done! The bevels on these are hand ground (not my specialty) instead of CNC milled to speed up the prototyping process; therefore they are a little rough and don't have our typical cnc milling lines on the bevel!

Well I wish I could say the much wiser was a given with age but it isn't! :D LOL

I bought one of those SWAG tables for my Dewalt portable band saw and they are super cool! I have most of my blanks water jet cut these days but don't be in a hurry to do that until you have a proven sellable designs.

I hand cut my Damascus and special order knives these days! You can start organize it so that you can bevel grind or file a few knives at a time. What kind of grinder do you have?

Have Fun

k... stop everythning and finish this! lol, kidding but seriously, you have to finish this and post the pics ASAP, the kid in me just grinned like the Cheshire cat... I still love these things.

My first venture outside of kitchen knives, which is strange as I have been a hunter long before I was a chef. Been working on them between kitchen blades and using up leftover bits and bobs for handles and hardware.

I ground that particular knife on a 1'' 30'' Grizzly Belt Sander/disk sander, but actually purchased and received a KMG-PL with variable speed about 1.5 days ago, still haven't got it put together, and need to get a power cord, and some odds and ends. Don't have anywhere to put it, but like I said a shop is in the works in the near, near future. Money can't buy skill, but I think this will help me stay with the craft, I don't think I'm going to loose money on it, I think I'll enjoy it a lot, and that's worth it to me. I know you don't need one, but I had been putting money back for something kind of frivolous and not useful, so I decided to buy this instead, still trying to put it together, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to electronics especially motors, and whatnot. I was hesitant to post this seeing as a novice like myself isn't really worthy of such a fine tool. Some might cringe a little.

I finished this up a couple days ago. I wanted to do an EDC with a Harley-Davidson feel. Black and orange G10 scales with satin finished 416 bolsters and pins and CPM-S35VN blade.

Take a look there if your aren't sure?
