I put the handle on top of the tang to get a perspective of how it would look. Antler is definitely not for the faint of heart. At least with a block you install the tang then grind down the block into a usable handle. Horn has no set line, etc. You must conform to the whims of the horn or ruin it…
Cool thing abt this piece of horn was the relief on the left side (which is showing). It fits perfect for the fingers to wrap and come at rest there.

Also trying to get the hang of the carbide radius platen. This is my first attempt and it’s actually going pretty well. It’s harder than a standard hollow grind for sure because it doesn’t lock in as solidly. I did this using the smaller of RD_knives RD_knives radius platens on an 1/8” blade with a 120 grit belt. It should clean up and line up nicely as I work through my belt progression.

How do you grind your fuller? I haven’t attempted one yet…
I honestly threw everything in my arsenal at it. This knife was mostly hand files and sanding. On the next one I’m doing I super glued some carbide tooling blanks on lines I scribed down the blade and ran a dremel tool with a stone down the length of it to get the initial groove. After that I cleaned it up with files and hand sanding.

Well, we all do it sooner or later!!!

I had a nice skinner blade of layered tamahagane and 1080. I hung it in the FC tank to check the pattern before the last sanding grit. Then went to do another task, and then fix dinner, and then do some hand sanding .... and found it the next morning. I was eaten severely. I reground it as a thinner and smaller blade. I had to redo the handle a bit because the tang was now thinner than when I cut the slot in the ebony. I'll post a photo of it after the final assembly today or tomorrow, but here is what it looked like when I found it.

Old timers strikes again😉...... Cell pbone.timer or Alexa if she's in your abode....🤔......Very helpful. For all my brain fart.forgetfulness...😜

Nate,
A good tip is to never fit the guard to the blade until after hardening and final sanding. The tang and ricasso will be thinner after that work and the slot will be a bit too large.
I made the guard super tight in fit and also knocked the guard down at the shoulders to create recesses into the brass. I’ll post more pics as the shingles allows.

Just had a set 9f GripX scales Crack in half wile drilling. Stuff reminds me if kirinite.. which I despise. I do not trust this material.

The little speckled stuff?
Interesting...you are the first maker I've heard not liking it.. and haven't tried it, but wanted to.

How close to the end/edge were you?

3/8" hole nearly centered on a 5x2 slab. Drilled a pilot then chased with a sharp drill. Was mounted on g10 liners. Cracked across the scale.

Never been a fan of these types of scales to begin with (like Kironite). This reinforced that opinion.

I saw a video on Instagram where he (I’m assuming the owner) put a sheet of it out in the sun and it was completely floppy. Better not leave your knife in a hot car! Once I saw that I was done. That and it is extremely prone to warping/unstable. Not a fan.

Another day, another experiment going on. I thought it'd be a good idea to do a keyhole guard.
I managed to do it in the end but decided to put it on hold for the moment, too much hassle to fit the guard without a mill.

I got a little impatient and cracked the wood. It was a success nonetheless, no light coming through and it's removable to do an heirloom fit.

I felt like being artistic today.
I have had this stag crown sitting on the bench for a long time. Last week, I slotted it to make a Mountain Man Folder and fitted a damascus blade and backspring.. I could see a dragon hiding in it. Today I let the dragon out. Still more work and cleanup to do, but looking pretty good. I'll finish the blade and assemble it tomorrow.
