Forged some puukko blades. Rhombic cross section is fun to make. Cleaned and roughly profiled.

Today a fellow came over who had a bin of old "mastodon" ivory and some "teeth". It belonged to his deceased father-in-law ... knifemaker Paul Pugh. According to the man, Paul was a major knifemaker, friend of R.W.Wilson's, Guild member, and made the knives for the movie Jeramiah Johnson. I can't find any listing of a Paul Pugh in the Guild, or elsewhere. I do recall R.W.Wilson telling me that he and another WV maker made the knives for the movie. So, maybe its true, maybe not? Doesn't really matter for this buy.

The fellow has had this bin stored away since the family auctioned the entire estate six years ago. The auctioneer said it could not be sold because it was ivory. The man said it had been in his FIL's house since at least 1965, when his wife played with it as a child. He said over the phone he had no idea what it was worth, or if it was real.
When I checked it out, I told him none of those tusks were mastodon. He asked if it was fake. I told him, "No, but it's not mastodon."

The bin held a hefty museum quality elephant tip 20" long by 3" round at the base, two almost identical left hand male walrus tusks also about 2' each (man, I wish they had been a L/R pair), an 11" juvenile elephant tusk that had been sanded out and polished, a nice size polished sperm whale tooth, a warthog tusk, and two smaller pieces of mammoth ivory.
After I told him what he had, I asked the chap what he wanted ... he asked if it was worth $200 ... I gave him $500. We were both quite happy.
I can see some exquisite knife handles in this lot. I also see a winter scrimshaw project on that tooth. I'm going to have to think about the walrus tusks for a while.

Thank you guys for the shout-out, I've been quite inactive in the forums and missed it.

Y y53p I received an email around the time of your last posting, I assume it was you. If not let me know and I'll send you my email.

And to keep up with the thread, more experimentation with finishes and different styles of spacers.

Some beautiful stuff but I'm lusting for that sperm whale tooth....😱

Fusion Friday! Combining Grimsmo Knives' amazing machining and my art, I started with John's classic dragonscale milling and first added hand engraved shading to give the design some visual depth. I then hand satin finished each dragon scale to give the design life and movement. Finished off with painstaking selective anodizing, almost a dozen separate voltages on one set and dozens of individually hand faded scales on the other.

I think we've come up with something pretty awesome in this collaboration, time to get them shipped back so John can build a couple amazing knives for Blade Show Atlanta!
