What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

David, sorry to hear it. I hope you get to feeling better really quick.

*Coincidentally, l sent you an e-mail just a bit before you posted. I apologize for taking so long to get back with you.

Thanks guys!

When I was younger, I used to megadose Vitamin C. Never got sick while I was doing it. I fell away from the habit some time in the last decade, but my health never seemed to suffer for it. But I'm back to it for now, at least until I'm back to 100%. I also made myself some experimental teas in the last few days, which included boiling citrus peels after eating the fruit, and then tossing in some dark chocolate after I removed and discarded the peels. Then poured into a mug with a bag of green tea, and my usual dollop of coconut oil. Was pretty decent tasting. I'm still not to 100% but I definitely feel like I'm on the mend.

Here is my suspicion about how I got sick:

Last week on Tuesday I made the decision to get back into cleaning, which I have not done in about six months. And even back then when I did it, I was not training steadily in the lift, but only did it periodically. When I hit my clean PR of 245 lb. more than a decade ago, I also had about thirty pounds more muscle than I do in November 2022. And yet, I worked up to a set of three rest pause singles of 225 x 1, 1, and a fail. Then a burnout drop set with decreasing weight and increasing reps. My legs were trashed. Very sore. And sore for almost a week. Yet only a couple days later, I went to karate, and sparred hard with a younger student for half the class. No sign of illness at that point.

But then it crept over me over the next two days, and the chances are that one or more of the other students at karate that Thursday had passed a bug along to me. Normally when people all around me are sick, I don't get anything. But I really taxed my system and so I am pretty sure that's why I was down for the count this week.

Anyway, I was going to hit the shop today to finally start on a hand axe for a friend who bought me a big sheet of Suretouch. Another maker profiled a partial tang hand axe for him, and then decided to get out of the craft, so he's having me do the rest. Also, I have a BRK Forrest Bowie in A2 that came with an inconsistent factory grind, and a Demko AD 20.5 in D2 that is .020" thick behind the edge to regrind. The hand ax job should not take a whole day, and so I thought I'd try to get all three done today. Well, unfortunately my apartment plumbing backed up, and I had to deal with that, but crisis averted. It's a temporary fix, for now and I'll have to finish Monday.

Long story longer, the work in the shop will have to start Monday, but may not be finished the same day.

Glad to hear you’re on the mend. I guy I used to work with eons ago was a workout freak, and he was constantly getting sick because he’d go through cycles doing just what you did, only he did it every session. He was an animal. So that’s probably exactly what you did.

Don’t forget the chicken soup.

I've got a fever now too but that's just because I have kids in school. It never fails. 😮

I don't know if this actually helps or not but I occasionally take Elixir Vegetal. It is essentially an extract form of Chartreuse, which is a traditional herbal liqueur made by Carthusian monks. I put just a few drops into seltzer. Some of the herbs used to make it are supposed to have medicinal qualities. If nothing else, it is very refreshing.

Take care and do what you need to in order to strengthen your immune system. When I have Covid, my wife made me teas of boiled red onions and lemons. Kind of rough going down but did make me feel better.

I think you're probably right David. I used to weightlift 5-6 days a week and would stay consistent for months on end, however when a flu bug came around, I'd often get it because I figured my body was already taxed too. I always had a hard time getting back to it after sitting around for a week from the sickness.

Many people will be sick and contracting illnesses more easily after being isolated and in decreased germ environments for such a long time. Our immune systems will take a while to catch up. David- try not to overdo it while not being 100%. Too easy to make mistakes when sick, and running belts and grinders requires your utmost attention! 😀

When I was younger, I did forms of Karate with intricate belt systems including mid-steps like brown with a black stripe. Later in life, I did stuff where the only belt was black and it didn't come quickly or easily. More recently, it was just a bunch of guys rolling around on the mat and that kind of stuff just wasn't a part of it.

I wouldn't put down the belt systems. I fondly remember passing tests to get them and how proud I was at the time. They are both milestones and heuristics for progress. I think older me has just moved on. Like learning the tea ceremonies in Aikido, it's a thing and offers its own value or personal enrichment. Whether or not that matters to a person is personal.

I have studied multiple arts most of my life and love all of them. I hate how divisive folks get instead of encouraging people to study/practice what they enjoy. You are spot on!

That's what I said. :)
