I was asked to regrind an Montana Americana Hudson Bay knife, in 1/4" stock thickness.
Here is the pic from their website.
But here is the actual knife the customer received (used). It was 3/16" behind the edge, the thickest I've ever seen a knife.
The edge bevels do not even apex at the heel for a full inch and a quarter. I don't claim to grind perfectly, and I understand that sometimes the interaction between platen clearance and handle scales can get in the way of making an apex start right at the heel. But I don't see how this was justified.
This is better.
Unfortunately I forgot to retouch up the edge, after reshaping it with 36 grit, so I have to take it back to the shop tomorrow.
But here are a couple geometry test pics while I was still grinding with 36 grit. I went a bit thinner still after this.
Here it is now:
I forgot to notify the customer before he shipped about my regrind mark, so I have not put it on yet. Awaiting word back from him, and I'll make a point to remember to mention it when people first contact me.
