What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

I have two projects swirling in my head. The Dirk and a Smatchet with the read of the Barax handle merge in. I am a fan of the Filipino Barong and think David could make that sing. Just have to sort some things out first. What width and thickness of steel from AKS would make an ideal Barong? 3" .188?

L lmalterna can you clarify your question? I’m not sure I understand the 3” part. Otherwise it depends on what you want to do with your barong. .188” aka 3/16” is going to have some heft to it especially if you want a tall blade. It will be a good chopper. I’m assuming you meant a 3” max blade height and probably somewhere between a 13” and 16@ blade?

Sorry, blade specs would be "roughly" 2.5" edge to spine at widest and 14" long. Chopping would be light green bamboo, banana stalks, meat and green coconut. Slicing meat, large vegetables, removing fish heads and cutting into steaks.

When I asked about width above, I was referring to how wide a bar of stock to lay out the pattern. With the way you do partial tangs, the hook portion would not need to be full width steel.

Would 1/8 or 5/32" 8670 serve well for this? The traditional barongs I have are thinner than their bolo cousins.

M McFeeli , I borrowed your knife for this. I'll ship it later today.

Time for the last coffee of the day before makers marks and sheaths. Tomorrow I might not make it to the shop since people are coming throughout the day to look at my apartment. I move to a farm house closer to the shop in a couple weeks.

Very Nice! I love the finish on the blades too, not just the handles...

Robert and his wife came to look at the apartment today, and when he saw my knives we got talking and it turns out he collects. He bought the Marten Scout prototype from me and I asked if he would mind me introducing him to you guys. He was all for it. Here he is with his new knife:

He and his wife were a pure joy to meet and talk to. The only thing that would make what I do more rewarding than it is already is if I could meet each and every one of you in person and shake your hands.
