What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

That’s one example. But for at least three reasons.

First, it does not have a sheath. Second it was a regrind of a knife commission I already made for someone. He changed his mind and asked for a wharncliffe. And third, it is, as you say, MagnaCut, and the rest are AEBL.

Good evening friends, I just wanted to update everyone on what's happening with current orders. I told a few of you recently that I would be able to work on your AEBL ROFR orders (right of first refusal, ie orders that did not require a deposit) within the next couple weeks, but I underestimated how much I have to do, and also was not aware I would soon be expecting a significant portion of the MagnaCut batch from last year back from heat treatment.

As many of you know I started a MagnaCut run around December 2022/January 2023, which was to be plasma cut and heat treated by Jarod Todd. Some things happened that ended up slowing down his shop activities considerably. This led me to trying New Jersey Steel Baron and Peters' Heat Treating for waterjet cutting and heat treating for a couple of runs to keep the lights on, so to speak, while I awaited Jarod to get back into full production. I am very happy with the quality of the blanks I have received from them, and they have fulfilled that purpose so far.

I also had a run of AEBL that was planned, the steel for which had been purchased by customers as advanced deposits, a couple months after the MagnaCut run was put in motion. There was also a small number of others who had paid deposits for knives on the run as well. Given the time the MagnaCut has taken, I eventually made the decision to cancel that order, and pay back the deposits, until Jarod is able to get caught up. I made that decision after I had set up the NJSB/Peters' runs.

I'm mentioning this because a little while after that Jarod informed me that he is almost done processing the MagnaCut blades, or at least the highest priority ones from the run, that is to say, most of the ones that have been reserved by deposit. I don't have the exact number of blades yet, but I do know that Jarod is making a push to get a good batch of them out the door in the next few days. That means that the free time I thought I would have to work on the NJSB/Peters' AEBL runs will likely be postponed upwards of another three months give or take.

The current items on the agenda are:

a Skinny Fat Bowie XL,
a dozen Insomniacs for Empire Outfitters,

these are the final AEBL deposits on the books I have to cover, and while both parties are willing to wait, I feel the need to make these orders the priority.

I will work on the NJSB/Peters' ROFR orders after that, as long as there are no MagnaCut blades in my shop that someone has put down a deposit on. That means maybe I will be able to work on a few of them after Empire Outfitters, or maybe the MagnaCut blades will arrive while I am still working on the Empire batch, in which case, I will finish the Empire order, and get on the MagnaCut until they are done.

Thank you for all your patience and understanding, and I look forward to serving each of you.

And lots of work on firewood this week as well. I just learned that my three week switch from wood at the house to propane cost me $445. Back to wood it is!
