What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Pardon the unglamorous pic, but this is to show the sheaths are done. The sharpening and maker's marks may be done tonight, or I may have a bit left to do tomorrow, but either way, I am as certain as I can be that they will be ready to ship tomorrow morning.

Well the glamor shots will be later tonight or tomorrow morning or early afternoon. But... yes, I am sending out invoices in order to get a jump on shipping in the hopes they all go out tomorrow.

Hi Dave!
The money should be on it's way to you.
If it's not: send up a flare! 👍

I am a little embarrassed by it. I'd like to use real boxes. I'd like to do a lot of things better. Moving to a new home/shop will be a part of it. Thank you for putting up with my ghetto methods.
naw i do the same thing. its recycling....I see it as a good thing. better than going straight to the landfill or recycle plant which uses energy to recycle it.

its a thumbs up from me.

Plan is to have all these ready to go out tomorrow afternoon. Now is sheath time, or at least the beginning thereof. Then maker's mark and sharpening. Should be breeze to get them done and packaged before 3 pm tomorrow, the new time that my mailman will be picking up going forward.

I really like the lines on that one on the bottom right. Great looking knife (and knives)!

I guess it's a good thing that I was hunting for a Prevail... 🤣

Glad you like it! I have Spyderco to thank for the inspiration, as can be plainly seen. Eric Glesser in particular, as he is the designer of the Resilience and Tenacious, which I modded and fell into this design direction. Suretouch is my favorite material for function, but I like how light Micarta is so I made an R&D Prevail with super thin textured Micarta alongside this batch. Here's what it looked like at first:

But the weight of the knife and the new center of balance (Previous Prevails I have carried have all been more handle heavy than this one) made me feel regret at not choosing Suretouch and grinding away until the same thickness. The feel in hand wasn't as confidence inspiring for quick grip changes from reverse grip to standard grip and back. Suretouch has that in spades especially if you use the pinky depression I grind out as a pinch/pivot point between grips.

That was Tuesday. Wednesday morning I concluded that I could make a slightly more aggressive texture. So I doubled up on drum channels, and I am happier with the result.

It's not quite Suretouch, but the extra grip, and a little practice allow pretty smooth transitions, which to me means a tool that is easy to use, and easy to put away. I change to reverse grip to put away edge forward in a right hip carry sheath.

In the dry, you can't really make out the checkering, so there it is. I took a couple other pokes at two or three of those little crisscrosses after the pics. As well. In the dry, you still can't really make out the checkering, but it has changed my sadness from overlooking Suretouch to a starry eyed curiosity. So far so good. I've never really like blocky handles though. Yes it's chamfered, but I didn't want to bring this axis of the knife too thin. In the past I've ended up with pinchy handles in some spots because I made the mistake of trying to start too thin, then chase a certain contour and overcorrect, and chase and overcorrect the overcorrection, eventually finding my handle's underbelly to be so ovall that the tang itself begins to curve. And I remember getting pinchy handles that required so much material removal that they became different knives altogether.

Anyway, I resigned myself to a "blocky" handle for this test, as a folder has a blocky handle like this, often with the deficit of a gap between the scales. It has grown on me in a short time. It will never handle like a Suretouch Prevail, because those are 7 oz to this one's 6 oz. And the one with liners is 7.1 oz with the white G10 Liners, and I did grind the Suretouch scales thinner before contouring, exposing the first layer of rubber.

In any case the Micarta Prevail was to see what happens when a super thick blade with a zero grind and a hollow 1/4" steel tang outline does when it is paired with the lightest material. I probably should have tried wood. You know, I have been hesitant to try a lot of these textures out with wood. Maybe I should just go for it. I have been given wood scales by a few friends, and I always hesitate to use it. Since my R&D knives get passed along anyway, maybe I should give it a try.

Anyway again, these pics are before final inspection and packaging.

Khukuri - gets a bite more scotchbrite time.

Edge-C 2 Spearpoint (every day gent[leman]'s carry) - I like how this new version feels in the hand, and the increased blade to handle angle, and the jimping really paid off as well. The grip is everything I wanted it to be. Secure and confidence inspiring. Enough leverage to do larger cutting tasks that a small knives at this weight usually don't have enough handle for, and enough grip security that poking it into objects isn't daunting t the fingers.
