What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Well one night of binge working might as well be followed with getting the job all the way done. Then my local friend can have these on Monday, and September 2022 will officially be my first month in two and a half years of doing this full time where I am truly ahead instead of barely above water (And on top of that something amazing might be happening this month as well re all my inability to keep quiet about MagnaCut, but I still cannot say for sure yet). Someone said a while back that my knife making journey was an inspiring success story.... to me success is an ongoing journey that comes by degrees.

Every happy customer is a success. But I have had my hurdles and made plenty of mistakes as well. I dropped a lot of money (for me, at the time) on a reblade idea that I was sure I could make work, based on a partial success I had reblading my Resilience a couple years ago. But it turns out with my level of equipment and experience there is still far too much of a learning curve ahead of for me to responsibly offer a reblade service. So I had to cut my losses and refocus back on continuing to work on and improve what I believe I can do well; making good user fixed blade knives.

Anyway, can I make 10 sheaths, 10 makers marks, finish and sharpen 10 blades, and get back with groceries before the clock strikes Sunday? We'll find out!

Also, the other night I talked about job satisfaction because I was "making cutting tools for men". It occurred to me that in today's world, it might be possible for someone to read that and have a negative reaction to it. All three knives I was working on that day were for male members of the human species. I have made my share of knives for ladies, and there was nothing exclusive meant by what I said. In fact, my mother owns more of my custom work than all but maybe a couple dozen people in the world, so there. ;) I just tend to be hired more often by men than ladies. By a factor of about however many customers I have to one. I can't think of a lady other than Mom who has yet hired me to make a knife, though I have been hired by men to make knives for the ladies in their lives.

There’s nothing like being able to earn a living doing something you love, especially when you can be your own boss. You obviously put your heart and soul into your work, and it shows by the beauty of the finished products and your happy customers. When you’re able to make so many peoples’ days just a little bit better, that’s truly living a good life.
