What's the matter with SOG?

As a reminder spyderco still makes the Military, Civilian, and police in the 4+" range. The police g10 is a serious piece at 4.5" of blade and a grippy pocketable handle.

Here is a Police i waved. After the wave, Reese Weiland did a zero bevel double edge. I named it "Somethin Nasty". :D

It is COMPLETELY safe to carrry while closed.

that does look nasty! like a ditch weapon right?

EXACTLY!

I rarely carry it unless my hackles are popping up. If the unfortunate event occurs and I have to use it... I fully expect this knife to sustain some damage in the scope of its use. Try to think of it as a waved D/E Civvy.

and it is double edged? a waved civilian sounds nasty as well

Spyderco may not say anything public about it regardless. Besides, they have the "afi" knife community defending them as it is. I might retract my accusation if Sal or Benchmade specifically say that it clearly isn't a knock off. But the similarities are so close, that you really have to be naive to not immediately see a good possibility that this is design stealing.

Question, would you take the same stance had that exact model was being sold at a flea market and was made by a no-name company in China?

Kaizen1, personally, I'm not a huge SOG fan. I do have a multi-tool that I love. I like several Spyderco knives and what Sal's said that he and his company stand for. A public "lynching" based on limited information makes me think about a classic Western movie, "The Ox-Bow Incident".

Basically, this thread makes me very sad. A no-name Chinese company's direct rip-off vs. an American company making what "might" be a rip-off doesn't bother me as much as fans of an innovative American knife company not living up to the owners expectations. Plagiarism and rip-off artists can best be defeated by not buying or recommending and informing the public about their products. Differentiating between plagiarism and rip-off vs collaboration and inspiration is the hard part when you don't have all the facts. Sorry for trying to be a voice of reason. :(

what a bunch of dicks. i doubt it was a collaboration because they would have said something in their description.

It's not just the similarity to Spyderco, I didn't even notice that until someone posted pictures to compare.
My problem is that it's completely ridiculous putting that notch in the hole. There are plenty of things to complain about here.

I do agree that maybe we should let the thread die, it's kind of getting off topic, and we have more than made our point.

Well I think this thread is more about the decline of SOG than the specific Spyderco copy issue.

SOG was pretty much "aquired" in 2009 by a capital investment corporation who probably saw SOG as a business that they could reorganize into a high profit/ low cost money making investment by farming out most of the work overseas...

They now stand in stark contrast to a company like RAT or Busse that are passionate about their product and see beyond the profit/loss sheet.

I guess globalization eats up another company..

Darn right! Read my sig line.

PS... One day, I'll pay Mike to make me a Waki :D ... One day that will prolly be a year away, but one day nonetheless ;)

I don't know why you'd apologize for forming your own opinion. We've both done that and are merely discussing the merits of those positions, at least that's what I thought we were doing. Collaborations in particular and inspirations tend to give credit to the other maker/company. For instance, Spyderco has the Emerson Wave patent on their Endura Wave. Spyderco also made it very clear when they collaborated with Kershaw and Ken Onion in creating the Spyker. Lastly, Spyderco even calls locks by their original names, like the "Walker Liner Lock" or the "Reeve Integral Lock."

Given that there's no mention of Spyderco in the SOGzilla knife description , there's no comment from SOG in either of the two threads open and there appears to be way too many similarities for it to be a coincidence, which they'd have to plead ignorance of (another highly implausible possibility), it seems reasonable to conclude that it's a knock off.

I understand your position here and I disagree with it. That doesn't mean that we're arguing or need to be angry about it, right?

Spyderco is prolly the most amazing production knife company ever! While I was in my Iraq tour, Sal sent me 5 OIF Natives (Which I kept one and gave the rest to my fire team) with a hand signed letter. I wrote to 5 knife companies, but Sal was the only on who sent me knives with a hand signed letter.

Only thing I could ever ask of Sal is for a tip up L&R clip on the new all Ti framelock. That would be a knife that I could use as EDC, yet not bescared of mucking it up.

Kaizen1, I'm not angry at all. Just sad that folks that purport to believe in a company and their philosophy can't follow it. Especially when the owner tries so hard to lead by example.

Plagiarists, liars, and thieves are among the lowest of the low, IMO. Until all the facts are known or given a chance to be presented, then I tend to lean towards "innocent until proven guilty". So far, at least IMO, none of the parties that are involved have had sufficient opportunity to present their side. I'm still waiting for SOG and Spyderco to comment. Once they do (or don't) then I'll make a judgment based on who says or doesn't say what.

I can understand that:thumbup:

I'm almost as dissapointed as I was when Benchmade came with the Vex. The reason being that I used to consider both SOG and Benchmade two companies who strive for innovation. I still refuse to believe that their creativity has diminished that drastically so they need to make such pointless moves... I hope that this SoGzilla (or whatever they call it) will be just an exception.

I didn't know that. Sal is a stand up guy:thumbup:

Well this puts SOG another step up the list of knives I won't buy.
