What's the Sharpest and Dullest knives you've received out of the box

Sharpest I would say have been most of the Buck knives I have bought. They all seem to come screaming sharp out of the box best I can remember. The dullest one that comes to mind was an Ontario M3 fighting knife, it was horrible.

Sharpest would be a Spyderco J.D.Smith
Dullest would be a Benchmade 730 Ares, absolutely horrid, came out of the box as sharp as a butter knife. That was the last Benchmade I ever purchased.

Sharpest: Cold Steel Large Luzon
Dullest: Cold Steel two hand all terrain chopper. Made in SA, but post Cold Steel sale. It didn't have an edge at all!

Dullest- benchmade bugout
Sharpest - shirogorov hati 3

CRK comes close for dullest, and spyderco for sharpest.

I didn't include my kitchen/work knives as they blow any pocket knife out of the water by a huge margin. 11° total edge just can't be beat.

Sharpest....tie...between Rigid(back inna day late 80's/early 90's)
Dull(not out fo the box tho) was a Randall I bought@ the big Louisville show off a "walk-a-round" wouldn't cut warm butter. Sent it back to Randall for an opinion&a spa/sharpning. Gary stated it must have been dulled delibertly...but blade showed no signs of it. My theory was it was ordered as a "display" of some kind or thst way for a reason. Came back from Randall sharp& has been GTG.

Over about fifteen years I have had super good luck with Benchmade sharpness so I implore you to maybe try again . . .

In the same breath I would add : I swear there are a number of less than kind people out there that order a knife , carry it a week or two until it is dull and send it back all wrapped up like they never carried it . Some supposedly brand new knives I have gotten from other brands have smelled like cologne . . . I'm just saying.

Sounds like with your luck buying from a brick and mortar or working with a mail order knife vendor that is willing to look over the knife before shipping is your best bet .

Many mail order vendors are willing to look them over but I recommend telling them specifically what you want them to look at :
Sharpness
Centering
Color and pattern of scale matching on both scales
etc.

They honestly don't really have anything that interests me outside of a fancied up damascus 940

The sharpest knife I ever got from the factory is this Buck 111 in Magnacut that came a few weeks ago. The edges are razor sharp & the grind is perfect. Dullest? I don't know, but a lot of times the edges on new knives are either too rough or uneven for my liking, and they need stroped or a few passes on a stone to clean them up.

Sharpest manufacturer in general is Spyderco, and Cold Steel knives (not machetes) are very good also, never gotten one I’d consider dull.

Dullest in general is CRKT. Most of the knives I’ve gotten from them have been butter knife dull, except those by “name” designers, such as the Ripples by Ken Onion. I recently got a neck knife dagger from them though and it was sharp (cheap, too) so maybe their QC has improved?

Even though i want my knives to be decently sharp ready for work out of the box, i've never been really bothered with the degree of sharpness, and that maybe says a lot about how sharp that knife was!
I recently bought the Mcusta minagi in VG10 and it really impressed me in two different ways.....first, hands down the worst fit & finish in a knife i've ever got, and second the sharpness.

The dullest, i don't really remember to be honest, even if a knife came with just a decent working edge i wouldn't pay much attention. A few passes on a strop and ready to go.

Sharpest out the box by far is Esee 3 & 4. Dullest which was a huge disappointment BRS Alpha Beast, a $409 knife which couldn’t cut butter. Fit and finish on the beast was amazing but for a $409 knife BRS could have at least tried to sharpen the edge. I understand it’s a flipper and maybe that’s why they decided to go with a butter knife edge but come on. For $409 it could at least cut paper which mine couldn’t come close to. I can literally press the edge on my skin as hard is possible with no cut. I bought it as an EDC which I know it’s not made for but come on. Luckily I love sharpening blades so I’ll have a mirror edge on shortly. The new work sharp diamond upgrade kits for the professional angle adjust up to 3000 grit are worth the money. I recommend this system 100 percent.
